Rear Door / Rear Hatch Speaker Adapters

I recently purchased a used 2011 4Runner w/o nav or jbl. I've come to discover that the drivers side rear door and rear hatch speakers were not working. Through a quick visual inspection I found out the previous owner replaced the rear hatch speakers with some infinity kappa 652.9i. The driver side hatch speaker wires broken off from the solder connection. The owner must have been on here at some point because they have the 32.9cf in the dash as well. Anyways they used a speaker adapter for the speakers on the rear hatch but only one hole lines up and they drilled 4 others to make them fit. Anyone know of an adapter that fits the factory mounting pattern?

Hi ForeRunnerSi,

The reason that you had no speaker operation at the rear doors and tailgate is because the tailgate and rear doors are wired IN-SERIES; much like a string of Christmas lights with one bad bulb; they are all dependent upon all bulbs to work! When your 'Party-mode' feature is off, ALL rear speakers are in series. When you have the 'Party-mode' system activated, that system disconnects the rear door speakers and uses ONLY the tailgate speakers; that should explain why you had no rear speaker operation! If you reconnect the tailgate speakers, they will all be operative!

Here's what you can do about fitting all of your aftermarket speaker choices:

Metra speaker mounting kits Just type in the vehicle year and model and they will provide you the model number that fits your truck (cost: around &20 bucks/pair)! Here (Below) is the kit that I used for my front door adapters:

"the alpine 1" dash component review" and here's a tutorial that explains just how the party mode works:

The "Party mode" tweak! (non JBL) 'Best to you'

Alright I'm a bit confused. My "Party Mode" works but it only works on the passenger rear door and the passenger side speaker in the hatch. Neither of the driver side rear door or driver side hatch work (due to speaker wires torn from speaker). I tested this using the fade and balance on the radio.

From what you've just said and from the link you gave me, both rear door and hatch speakers are wired together in series. But from what I'm finding, granted I have no idea what the previous owner did, Each rear channel L or R is wired independently of each other, but the channel itself is in series. ie only the door speaker and hatch speaker from the associated side of vehicle is wired together. Or else you'd have no ability to adjust the balance in the rear of the vehicle.

Awesome thanks

I wasn't sure if there were ones that did or did not fit even though they say they will. The adapters on my speakers look similar to a Toyota specific one, thats why I questioned it.

The L & R side speakers; as well as the front and rear speakers have their own amps; four amp total. As I said in my previous post, when the 'Party-mode' is turned OFF, all speakers should be ON; except when one of the speakers is either blown or disconnected. So your passenger side speakers SHOULD all be operative when configured that way!

Just be sure (if you order mounting adapters) to give the year of the 4Runner and the brand of speaker that you intend to use, and they'll send you the correct hardware!

rig, Cheers

Speaker adapters

Apparently, TacoTunes.com sells adapters that will work for all 8 speakers.
