It comes stock with an engine immobilizer. Not sure what else to say. No alarm in the world is going to stop a smash and grab to take vehicle contents. It takes a thief five seconds to break a window, grab what he saw and run. Faster than you can get up and look out the window.

Conversely, there is also no alarm to protect a vehicle from being dollied onto a roll back truck and stolen that way too.

So, it comes with an engine immobilizer to keep thieves from stealing the vehicle the traditional way. No alarm will slow down a thief breaking a window nor loading the 4Runner up onto a flat bed.

What is it you want?

I know that if someone wants it they will take it. I don't care so much about smash in grab since I don't have anything in it yet. I am more concerned with it disappearing and being sold at a chopshop and having something I owe money on that I don't have anymore. My fiancé had her brand new 2016 Civic stolen where she works from (right from the office never found) and I work 2 minutes away in the same corporate area... We have had a car stolen here and some other cars lifted with the tires taken. It would be nice to find it if it goes missing.

I think out of all the posts in this forum there have been two cases of a 5th gen 4Runner being stolen. One left his keys in it and the other was loaded onto a flat bed if I remember correctly. The engine immobilizer pretty much makes stealing it with no key impossible except on the back of a truck.

I have heard of people buying a cheap phone and plan, leaving it in the vehicle and using the "where's my phone" app to track the vehicle. You can get basic plans really cheap.

Mine came with Skylink which is similar to LoJack but better and it's great. Has a handy app that keeps track of where the vehicle is and has a hand 'geofencing' feature that comes in pretty handy. It came with 3 years of service and after that there is a nominal yearly subscription but it might be worth checking into.

I have a Glock, that's enough theft deterrent if I'm in the vehicle.

If I'm not, I have insurance.

No worries either way.

I'm considering the viper system with the tilt motion sensor, backup battery system, invisibeam field disturbance sensor and audio glass break sensor.... with an autostart,
for less than the toyota autostart option I declined (and I am now regretting). The tilt is interesting to me, because there are lots of truck tires stolen in my area. New trucks left on concrete blocks. ouch.

I believe one 4runner was mention being stolen here on the forum in the last couple of years from the [master] key being duplicated while it was in for service.

Maybe one of the safest practices is making use of the valet key whenever you need to give a key to anyone

If you can swing it, add gap. Your auto insurance company may let you add it or sometimes banks/cu that finance sell it separately. Its usually cheaper than getting it through the dealer. It will CYA and give you a bit of peace of mind so you don't have to worry about stuff like this.

There was a thread a while back where a member here had his 4Runner stolen from out in front of his house. It was locked, factory alarm on & he had the keys. There were all sorts of comments from how could this happen to those who didn't believe the guy to those who thought it was an inside job.

It was a long thread with updates that concluded with the truck being located sometime later. It appeared it was indeed stolen, wreaked and abandoned. The OP posted pics. I don't remember who it was now. But, it pretty much proved that if someone wants your truck - they'll get it.

Add to that - when we bought our 2013 SR5 3 years ago this month, we were told by the sales guy that the dealership looses 2-3 vehicles off their main lot per month!

So, the only way I can think of preventing this (since any tracking measures are after the fact) is to wire in your own hidden enable switch. This would prevent the vehicle from being started and driven away. It doesn't prevent loading the vehicle on a flatbed or breaking the glass and stealing the contents; but it's a start.
