Buzzing/Vibrating Brake Pedal

Another brake thread...... :-)

I posted this in another thread and decided to Create my own.

I was involved in another thread talking about grabby brakes and my wife and I have gotten used to it!! Took longer than we anticipated, bet 3 weeks and we're good!!

I have noticed something that started yesterday and it has been doing It since. It's not the "swooshing" others have talked about. Mine makes that but not much different than other vehicles I've owned. Thats not a big deal.

Mine makes a buzzing sound and whatever it is, it also vibrates the pedal. It vibrates for 1-2 seconds after depressing the brake pedal. I'm careful to not trigger the emergency stop feature. If I barely press the brake pedal, it doesn't seem to do it. Once more force is applied (even slowly), it does it. It does it whether moving or sitting still. Whether in park or in drive or in reverse. It even does it when the engine isn't running , but the key must be ON. (Not Acc.) Its quite loud and the buzzing feeling is quite noticeable. Very easy to hear and feel since the car doesn't have to be running...

I just noticed when I made a video this morning, it does it when you first turn the key to the ON position. Normally I proceed past that to start and don't notice it. It does it for a longer duration when first turning it to ON. Maybe it's a pump building pressure?

While it is possible I will "get used to it" like is often said and has already occurred on the overall feel and sensitivity of the brakes, this concerns me because it wansnt doing it before. I did have new tires installed on a Sunday, but it wasn't doing it right after or on Monday. Since it does this even when it's not running or moving, it seems unlikely to be that.

Here is a link to a video. Key is ON. Engine isn't running. The noise is not the mechanical pedal or swooshing, but a buzz/humm afterwards.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/km4njk3trf...%20AM.mov?dl=0

Has anyone had this buzzing in the pedal and it does it even when the engine isn't running? Thoughts appreciated. I'll keep my eyes and ears (and even foot) on it in case it changes. I'll probably take it by the dealer and see what they say. Zero chance they will be able to say they don't hear it or feel it... thanks!

That is a fair description. Does it do it every time you press the brake?

I would understand it doing that when first starting the truck to build pressure or to prepare the brake system after the vehicle has been started, or even when you are under an emergency brake situation where the brake assist kicks in, but EVERY time the pedal is pressed...?

Before yesterday, even if it always did it at start up and I didn't notice it, it wasn't doing it every time I pressed the pedal. (Lets say I was wrong and it was doing it every time I pressed the pedal, it certainly has gotten much more severe...)

Mine did that from the day I took ownership. I would press on the brake and feel a pulsating sensation coming from the brake pedal. Didn't matter what speed I was going or how hard I pressed the brake.
I brought it to the service shop and they said it was a brake actuator assembly. Said without warranty it would cost over $2,500 just for the part and at least $1,000 for labor, with a total cost of about $4,000 for the job.
Luckily I got the only one in inventory in the USA, back in July.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did that. Like these....

Vibration in brake pedal

Rapid Vibration in brake pedal, even in park.

https://www.4runners.com/threads/201...vibration.510/

But the majority of people say things like, "its normal" and "you'll get used to it"... Some complain and never post anything else. A few said they had their master cylinder replaced and it didn't do it anymore. Nothing super clear and I didn't see a post where it said they had it happen when the car wasn't running... Anyhow, many of those threads started back in 2010 and I would imagine much has changed since then. If I missed a post that provides a clearer answer, I would appreciate a link. If you just assumed I didn't search, that is not the case.

I definitely want to be prepared before going to the dealer and you guys are the experts! Thanks!

Thanks! That's helpful! So this fixed the problem? Hasn't happened since? Thanks!

The pulsating in the brake pedal has been eliminated since it was replaced.

Not every time, but regularly. I don't really notice it anymore. I have never felt the ABS or the panic braking.

Just FYI - found the OEM actuator for $1980 FWIW. Still expensive as hell, but $500 less hell.

Just to close the loop on this. I took it to the dealer and they said what I assumed they would say, it's normal... They did compare it to another new 4Runner on the lot.... And it did seem very similar to me...

I will say this: The day I took it to the dealer, it didn't seem to vibrate as bad. Since then, there have been a couple of occasions where it was more noticeable than others; somewhat sporadic. For a bit, I thought it might have been the type of shoe I was wearing because I never noticed it when I was wearing my thick soled boots, but noticed it when wearing dress type shoes... That does change how apparent it is, but it's still there and there are still days where it vibrates harsher than others, even to the point I can actually hear it.

I'll continue to be aware and monitor it. At least the dealer did a good job checking it out and documented it...
