TRD Off Road with kdss or upgrade suspension later
So the short of it is that I can't get anyone to order me one with kdss. Thinking about it, I can buy new without and get the suspension upgraded in a year. Honestly, I would prefer the more comfortable ride of kdss from what i hear but I have not ridden in one to say for sure. I'm not planning on doing a lot one off reading but we do go camping a lot and some times the roads get bad.
What do you all think? Keeplease looking for kdss or just get the best deal that I can and upgrade the suspension later.

My TEP with KDSS handles like a dream. It took some time to get my dealership to order one for me. I am in the SE region and they don't really like KDSS here either. From what I've read Gulf States is the same way.
I was prepared to go out of state to get what I wanted so perhaps that is an option for you also.
You will get a mixed bag here when discussing KDSS. Some can't resist putting it down and others absolutely love it (myself included).
If you really want it then push to get it. It's your money, spend it the way you desire.
FYI, KDSS cannot be added after the fact so if you want it it has to have the system from factory.

I'm not sure why they dont like the kdss option here. It's a simple add on that they can make a the of cash from.

Kdss
Our '16 4R Trail came with KDSS and it handles beautifully on twisty roads at all legal speeds+. It is so much better than the '15 Wrangler that we traded on it that it is hard to believe the difference. We now cruise on the paved roads at highway speeds, and on the off-roads at 4x4 speeds. The 4R is the 10th 4x4 since I bought my first new International Scout in 1964, and it is the best by far! - Ted

Our 2017 Offroad Premium with Kdss should be here today. The options and color we wanted, there was one only in the state. It took the dealer a three way trade to make it happen. I looked at every dealer website in the state. If your region is that difficult buy from out of region. Buy what you want. Don't settle. Ask the out of state dealer about shipping. It might be the same cost to ship vs airfare and return fuel.

I went without KDSS due to it no being available in my region without ordering.
Best deal I was going to get for one with was 40k and change to order. Ended up paying 37750 for same vehicle with no KDSS readily available.
Figured for $2300 I can do some pretty good mods so took the deal for one without it.
Either way, I think you'll end up pretty happy.

This is option b. I have a family member that works for Toyota so I am going to try that route and see if they will work with me. If not, this is the path that I'm going to have to take.

Depending what part of TX you are in, you could be only a day's drive away from CO. Up here it seems that every TE on the lot has KDSS. Then you could take a little excursion up to ski country and come back to this forum and gripe about how the TE does not have full-time 4WD.
I'm one of the KDSS fan boys, so I think you should get it.

Honestly, if you don't already know what you're missing with KDSS it will never make a difference to you.

You could say that for every non-safety improvement ever made to any vehicle. Audio systems of all kinds, heated leather seats, cruise control, navigation, floor mats, power windows, sunroofs, convertible roofs, various electrical outlets, automatic climate control, interior dome lighting, cup holders, glove boxes, console boxes...a list with dozens more items on it.
No one "missed" any of these items either in times of yore.

Sure.
I never drove a 4Runner with KDSS except for the one I bought, but I would have bought one with or without KDSS. After having driven it, I am very happy it had the option. But if the question is being asked, and the OP doesn't know the difference are they really missing out? My only joy in it is that it has larger sway bars than a non KDSS version. Coming from primarily sports cars before this, it's nice that it stays flatter going around a corner a bit faster than maybe you should have than a non equipped one. I know how it works, but the KDSS system itself isn't something people will see use out of unless they spend day in and out on some decent trails. The largest benefit is the larger sway bars themselves for on-road use.
Edit: For the record I didn't buy mine because it had KDSS. I bought it because it was the only Super White Trail Premium I could find in the area.

KDSS is worth it, TX sucks and no dealership in this region has any. hence why I'm driving 800 miles to trade my 2014 w KDSS in for a 2016 w KDSS... opting not to go for the 2017...

I've had a TRD Off Road Premium with KDSS for a week. I test drove without it, did some research and thought about how I'd use the truck and went with KDSS when I bought. I'm happy I got it. I definitely notice it in quicker turns at highway speeds (on/off ramps, etc.), and the overall ride quality is very good. Haven't done any off road yet, but I did replace the OEM tires with KO2s today.

How are those KO2s?!?!?! Are they quiet?
I've been running Cooper ST Maxx for 3yrs now... road noise started to get to me... looking at grabbing the KO2s once I pick up my new TEP on Monday...
