5th Gen Poll Results - Perceived Problems

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who participated in these polls over the past 24 hours. The polls are now closed and it's time to discuss the results in this thread.

What will these polls tell us? In reality, not much. They are informal polls with no strict framework that is required to do a scientific poll. We did not determine mileage, age of vehicle, etc.
What they WILL do however is put to rest some myths and misinformation about perceived problem areas with the 5th Gen 4Runner.

This forum is a place for enthusiasts. It does not represent the total population of the total 4Runner ownership very well. What it DOES do however is provide a "tip of the spear" area for emerging issues. Many of our members, me included, use their 4Runners both on and off road. We have some members that drive 50K/yr on the highway. We have other members that have run the Rubicon and other harsh trails. We have some that have hung a ton, literally, of additional weight on them. So if the 4Runner is going to have a problem then this group would logically be the first ones to have them.

When something performs as advertised, very few talk about it. However when someone has a problem, social media and the internet is the first place they come to tell about their issues, and this forum is the number one place on the internet for 5th Gen 4Runners. With that said, there has always been the old "I heard..." or "I read..." posts that say the specific problem that person is having is commonplace. That is why I started those polls, to show that, while a singular or small sample is having an issue, it is by no means common. With that said let's move on to the results. I didn't make a poll for that for one for a few reasons:

1. User error. Who knows if its really the entune or if the guy is just technically challenged. In my world it's very seldom the hardware or software, its the user.

2. Interface. A lot of the problems are with phone/entune interface. Who knows if its the phone or the entune. My guy at the dealer says 90% of the problems he solves are not entune, its the phone having the issue.

So that's why no poll on that subject. It would be even less real than the ones I did lol.

Thanks a lot for these! I'm a 4th gen owner, and am about to order a 2017 in the next few days. I was on the fence regarding both KDSS and the sunroof, mainly because of concerns about reliability. I've decided to opt for both, in part due to your poll results. I realize they have relatively small populations, but the percentages look positive enough for me.

I didn't get a chance to vote before the threads closed but I just have to say I've had two door lock actuators replaced already and I'm not even at 35k miles yet. My suspension also squeaked when it was stock and I had the dreaded "lean." The most annoying issues by far have been with the Entune radio system.

Other than that it's been gravy. Best truck I've owned.

It comes with a user manual about as thick as the user manual for the whole vehicle. That alone says to me user error is going to be common. I use mine to listen to the AM traffic radio in my area. Works great for that.:bounce:

So, my TE 4Runner has a long list of issues;

The sunroof leaks even without it.
It does lean, especially with a full tank of gas and armor which happens to not be centered or have equal weight distribution.
It creaks, squeaks, clunks and have various other strange noises because of the highly stock suspension.
The KDSS is broken, but I have no dash light.
The built in seat massage feature stopped working the minute I drove off the lot.
I have never had a pole in it, so I can't answer that question.
The brakes work best with the right foot, intermittent issues when the left foot is used.
Radio never works because all I ever hear is crap coming out of the speakers.

I guess I should have taken out a 72 month loan and got a Bugatti.

Other than those issues, I love my 4Runner.

I'd love to post these on the Wrangler forum I'm a member of currently. The Jeep was fun when I didn't have a commute but it's a damn turd. Been losing coolant since 23k miles. A new radiator, a "tightened" hose (they added a zip tie to what was originally a compression fit) and now at 29k it still seems to be losing it with no puddles, smoke or scary looking oil. Glad to know these are solid rigs. I'll be joining the ranks in a month or two I hope.

I didn't respond to any of the poles -

- so all of the results are skewed from real world actuals.

I started driving in some really old rigs:

six volt dc generators (brushes and commutators would fail annually)
six volt, 35 watt sealed beam headlights (filaments would short out)
six cylinder, flat head, single camshaft engines (rebuild every 25k miles)
single barrel carburetors (rebuild bi-annually)
three speed manual, column shift trannys (adjust linkage annually)
condenser and point distributor (tune-up annually)
rayon or nylon cord tires (good for about 20,000 miles)
no heater
no radio
no clock
no power locks, windows, brakes, steering, seats, mirrors
vacuum wipers (stopped working when driving up hill
no window washers

As the years went by the cars and trucks improved - more features - more reliability - more comfort -

Now I have arrived at the most reliable, best performing vehicle I've ever owned - If it has any flaws I haven't noticed them. In fact some of the features on this rig I don't even use. I love it.

So what point was I trying to make? Darn, I don't remember!
