Black Badge Overlays

Hi All
So I'm at my dealer for a 40k oil change and I noticed a new 4Runner on the sales floor. The badges jumped out to me as they are black and I've been wanting to do that myself. Well, come to find out they are badge overlays with double sided tape! I think I found my next update!

I love the look, especially on a dark colored 4runner. This whole time I thought people sprayed it or something lol. Or just bought black badges.

I'd bet that every other one you saw WAS sprayed. Not paint, but Plasti-dip. Can be done on the vehicle. Clean the area thoroughly, mask around the area, and apply multiple very light coats. The gap between the letters and the body allows you to peel the plastic away from the paint leaving it on the letters/logo.

Or it could be paint, but that requires removing the badges from the vehicle first then sticking them back on.

ETA: For $130+shipping+tax, I'd definitely at least try the Plasti-dip first, but that's just me.

+1 for one $8 can of plastidip, some self motivation, and the satisfaction that you did it yourself and saved $100. Seriously, don't spend that kind of money on that kit when you can dip for a tenth of the price. Search plastidip / chrome / badges / de-badging for lots of useful info right here on the forum.

PM me if you want some guidance. Good luck man.

This, and I think plastidip looks better on the SR5 because the letters dont run together like they do on the NOX kit. I had never painted anything in my life and plasti dipped all of the chrome on my 4runner in a few hours on the weekend and that was with messing up 4 times on one SR5 badge.

Here's how I did mine:

I didn't like the way the "SR5" looked so these look much better IMHO.

Ebay decal overlay. Cheap!

Seem very expensive for overlays, you could always use plasti-dip glossifier to give them the shiny look as well.
I'm going to be "plasti-dipping" mine over the coming week. My only question for those who have done it on the rear letters, did you spray over the entire rear plastic piece or remove each letter? I think I'd rather spray over the entire section, but don't know if i need to get the underside as well (near the hatch release). I just don't want it do peel easily!

Has anyone seen black overlays for the TRD Off Road side badge? I've found all the others online varying in price but no "Off Road" anywhere. Just want to see if they look any better than the SR5 overlay before going the plasti-dip route. Thanks!!

$90 For set of plastic letter covers is a joke. Brand new emblems cost less than that but I guess if people are willing to pay for it then there is a market.

I went the plasti dip route for the side badges that I figured I'd have trouble finding. They came out really good. Did about 6 coats. Little time consuming picking out between the smaller letters but pretty good looking. I'll use the overlays for the rest of the vehicle now.
