Toyota 4Runner 2010+ ICON Stage 1 vs Stage 2

We get a lot inquiries about the
Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits
from ICON Vehicle Dynamics and
what is the main difference.

Stage 1 Kit – K53061

The Stage 1 system works well in most on and off-road scenarios by significantly improving factory body roll and overall driving ability. ICON 2.5 Series front coilover shocks feature a vehicle-specific tune to give your Toyota 4Runner great ride quality on or off-road, and they are adjustable from 0 to 3" of lift.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS:

Part #58646 - 2.5 SERIES IR COILOVER KIT
Part#56505 - Pair REAR 2.0 ALUMINUM SERIES IR SHOCK
Part #52700 - REAR 2" SPRING KIT

Stage 2 Kit – K53062T

This ICON Stage 2 suspension system uses the same components as the Stage 1 system with a few simple changes and additions. The 2.5 Series coilover shocks used in this system are the Extended Travel version, offering increased wheel travel that will enhance your on and off-road performance even more so than the standard travel units. Since these shocks do provide more suspension travel, they require the use of an ICON upper control arm. The tubular steel uniball upper control arm kit found in this system offers improved articulation and strength over the OE control arms, and has alignment correction built-in.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS:

Part #58647 - EXT TRAVEL 2.5 SERIES IR COILOVER KIT
Part #56505 - Pair REAR 2.0 ALUMINUM SERIES IR SHOCK
Part #52700 - REAR 2" SPRING KIT
Part #58451 - TUBULAR UCA KIT

Other options for both the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Kits:

Part #56100 - ICON Rear shock shin guards
Part #54000 - Billet lower adjustable link arms
Part #54100 - Billet upper adjustable link arms
Part #54200 - Adjustable track bar
Part #52800 - ICON Overland Series dual rate 3" lift rear coil springs
Part #56104 - Rear hydraulic bumpstop kit
Part #191011 - ICON tubular uniball upper control arm cover caps
Part #198000 - ICON 2 pin spanner wrench

Thanks for this! I'm in the market, so this is really helpful.

Here's my predictable newbie question:
Will the Stage 2 work with KDSS? I think I read somewhere that extended travel may require additional modification to work with KDSS.

Long Travel, Link Arm & KDSS

Quick question: How does a track bar affect KDSS and long travel suspension. I don't see the connection - no pun intended. I see the advantage of an adjustable track bar but not how it allows you to add long travel suspension to a 4Runner with KDSS. I have KDSS and want to upgrade my suspension with a long travel ICON kit.

From ICON's website, a description of the track bar:
OVERVIEW:
This Adjustable Track bar for the FJ Cruiser is the best way to optimize your 4 Wheel Handling and Wheel Alignment. When your track alignment is off center it can cause premature tire wear and have as precise articulation. This bar is an easy install and can be finished in a couple of minutes and can easily be adjusted on the truck without having to take it on and off.
KEY FEATURES:
On truck Adjustability using ICON's pinch housing"
3/4" Rod End and Polyurethane Pivots, for excellent strength and longevity
High Misalignment Spacers for Excellent Articulation
ICON Vehicle Dynamics Life Time Warranty
Made in the USA

This may not be an issue for newer 4Runners, but here was the problems some owners ran into.

The track bar has a slight bend in it to avoid contact with the KDSS cylinder. It's not really necessary.

Both kits will work with KDSS. I personally would not run a lift without aftermarket UCAs.

We can also offer you all a Stage 1-Extended which includes the extended travel coilovers without the arms of the stage 2 if youd like to add your own UCAs.

@TotalAutomotiveLV We currently run the stage 2 suspension (non-KDSS) and just upgraded the rear springs to the OME 2899 "super-heavies" due to the overall rig weight with the new rear SSO bumper and the fact we run with a Turtleback Trailer 90% of the time.

My question is: Should I upgrade the 2.0 rear shocks to the 2.5 remote reservoir to help control this added weight? Or do you think the 2.0's will be enough?

Thanks

Just one opinion.

Springs control the weight. Shocks dampen the springs. Doubt you would see any difference in dampening characteristics with 2.5 vs 2.0. Unless you went with adjustors and dialed it in for different uses.... 2.5 is mainly for high speed off-road. Doubt you do much with a tuttleback loaded up 90% of the time.

Does it feel OK as is?

That was my initial thought as well, but it's still a significant addition of moving mass to to be stabilized and it would seem that an upgrade would help reduce the stress on a smaller shock. I would definitely go with the CDC valve if I made the jump.

As to the speed of travel with the TB... you would be surprised. I've been known to run 50+ down Mojave Road. But you're right; 90% of the time its steady as she goes.

I don't have a lot of miles on it with the rear bumper installed but it does feel like there is more bounce than before. After our Death Valley run in a couple weeks I'll know more about how it handles.

I don't know any of this for fact.. but my guess is the 2.5 and 2.0 rear shocks for the application are designed with about the same dampening characteristics. They don't design 2.5 for heavier rigs... typically, just more abuse and quick cycling. But like I said... if you get adjusters (which requires remotes) you could dial in more as necessary. I think the middle setting is about their normal factory dampening. If you are getting bounce.. you need a bit more rebound dampening... although bounce is not uncommon with a trailer at all.

It's really hard to setup a suspension that works perfect under all conditions. You typically get loaded or unloaded optimized. Trail or speed... or somewhere in the middle. Adjustable dampening gives you a bit wider optimization range, but you are still stuck with the springs...

Those rear shocks are horrible. 3 of mine leaked within 10,000 miles (found puddles of oil on the garage floor).

I am switching brands for the rears next time.

Maybe there was a bad batch... Never had a problem and know many locals with same and 0 issues outside of normal rebuild intervals. Generally a great product IMHO. YMMV. I've always run boots on mine. The lower rod section will get roughed up by rocks and debris.... And kill seals. I think they include them now.... This is true of any rear shock with this orientation and exposed rod.
