Great article, but the words "Expedition" and "Overlanding" needs to go away. "Trail riding," "Four-wheeling," etc. have all been great descriptors for many years.
I don't think I could tell someone with a straight face that I'm "going overlanding" this weekend when I'm just going four-wheeling and camping along the way.

I can't agree more...the term is being beat to death....just go camping, have fun, wheel, there's a few here that drive more dirt roads then paved....
but not many....

The color of the TRD pro looks like Cement. Should it be a 2017 instead of 2016?
Who knows what year it is? Probably just one of their fleet vehicles. Notice the sunroof, no trd badging on the back, no trd on the headrests. But they were showing off the new 2017 color.
Nice article. Or, at least the pictures were good. The text makes it sound like it is written by a Millenial who just put down his phone and left the city for the first time, which sounds a bit goofy overall. I'm sure that's his intended audience as well. Not a problem. At least he got out and saw some great country.
I totally agree with Throwback. I'll stick to my road trips and stay away from this marketing speak.

I agree with the sentiment, even as a relative noob to this type of adventure I feel compelled to call it an "off-roading camping trip" or "4-wheeling and camping" etc.
However, in the case of the article I think he was referring to the group called "Expedition Overland" that seemed to be accompanying them and offering consultancy on their trip.Home Page - Expedition Overland
Expedition Overland truck is in several of the pictures like the lead truck just under the picture of the map. They have also produced a nice series of shows online, documenting long trips through North America as well as the one through Central America in 2 new, 5th Gen. 4Runners. Both 4Runners were modified including a cabinet system in the trunk with the slide out cooking surface that was referenced in the article.

Reason: took out "heavily" modified.
They heavily modified both 4Runners including a complete, custom cabinet system in the trunk with the slide out cooking surface and fridge that were mentioned in the article.
"Heavily" by that definition would be featherweight to what many of the members here have done to their rigs, and not for free either.
Times are changing, 10 years ago the term overlanding was exculusive to dudes who drssed like zoo-keeps who drove Rovers. Now with the popularity of XO and the demise of the truly capable Rovers, the term overlanding has been re-written to describe backcountry car camping by middle class adventure seekers.
Jump on the bandwagon and join us overlanding. Your in great company the 4Runner is a excellent overland vehicle.
Drive your rig through South America, Africa, or accross Asia and only then could you say you are properly overlanding.
Let's not kid ourselves - when are we ever more than 50 miles from a Walmart in the U.S.?!
I at one time though the same way, but calling camping what most refer to as overlanding doesn't quite fit the what takes place. When people hear the term camping they see a family with a tent or 30' trailer in a developed camp resort. That's not what overlanding is, and it's the type of environment that most overlanders avoid.
