Magnetic Grey color match vinyl or dip

Hello Everyone,

After searching around I could not find a thread on getting the front and rear bumpers on the Magnetic Grey 5th Gen Trail's to match the rest of the 4Runner. I'm considering plastic dipping or vinyl wrapping them but was curious if anyone has a good source for the materials that match the best.

thank you for the knowledge and experience for best way to proceed

If you want cheap then plasti dip is best. The problem with either plasti dip or vinyl, is that beings the bumpers are silver underneath, rocks and road debris will chip the front pretty easy and the silver will stick out like a sore thumb. I am pretty picky and that would probably bug me.

While spendy, for $330 shipped you can order new factory black trd pro pieces. I actually just did that last weekend, and posted a pic of my wife changing them out in here, within 5 minutes I had a pm from a member interested in the front factory silver piece, and ended up trading him the piece for a good amount of ammo. Win win for both of us and took the sting off the $330 as well.

That aside, many members have been very happy with either plasti dip or vinyl, vinyl being more durable. I definitely wouldn't pay too much for vinyl though with the trd pro option being a bit more.

Don't buy that stuff, I tried it with a few parts for my mag grey, and it didn't work. The paint doesn't spray with an even coat, so you get areas that are matte and areas that have the metal flake.

Then it didn't stick to the plastic and started to flake off. I would not try it.

Automotivetouchup.com can get you the exact spray out in a can. Anything you put on will be susceptible to chipping.

I'd find someone with an SR5 that wants to trade bumpers.

I painted mine black using Krylon Fusion for plastics satin black. I sprayed 6 coats of black and 3 coats of clear on the front and back valances. In about a week the black paint on the front valance was already chipping away and the silver underneath was noticeably visible (and annoying). I ended up ordering a black TRD Pro valance for the front. It seems to be a solid piece of black plastic and when it chips it shows black. I assume plastidip and vinyl will chip much like the paint did. If you want black, I'd skip all the extra work and just order the TRD Pro valance (hurts the wallet). If you want MGM, I'd see if you can find a person with an SR5 who wants to swap.

-- OR -- Put more than 3 coats of clear on whatever you paint... maybe the magic number is 3 coats of paint + 7 coats of clear... who knows.

I'm in SC, but they showed up like 3 days after placing my order. They were very fast. I also called to confirm the parts and the customer service was friendly and helpful.

I ordered from here: Toyota Parts and Accessories - Genuine OEM at Wholesales Prices | Toyota of Dallas

I would have ordered from McGeorge as Trixx did, but the Dallas shop had cheaper shipping for me (I'm in TX). I just googled the part number (53901-35250) and shopped around to find the lowest price when shipping was included.

I plasti-dipped mine 10 months and 19,000 miles ago and haven't had any issues with chipping. If it does chip it's easy enough to mask it off and spray another coat.

I plasti-dipped my valances initially to make sure I liked the look. the back held up fine, but the car wash used some bug remover on the front and it melted, so I peeled it off.

I pulled the valances off the truck, scuffed them, primed, and then painted with 3 coats of satin black. the back of course looks fine. there's some chips in the front, but not too bad.

the dip on the tailgate emblems has held up well, but I need to hit the one in the grill again.

This is mine with anthracite plastidip. I like it and think it looks good. It's not an exact color match but a nice off set imho.

I really like the texture of that bedliner on there.... Did you do that yourself(and with what) or was it done by a shop?

Thanks!
