Mrfobby's 2012 Trail Edition Build Thread

Hi Everyone,

My name is Angelo and I have a 2012 T4R Trail Edition with KDSS. I wanted to share a little bit of my background with cars before I purchased the 4runner.

I previously owned a 2004 nissan 350z which was my pride and joy. I was very deep into the whole car show car meet thing when I was younger. My favorite movie growing up was The Fast and The Furious. I remember telling myself that I would drive a super low car once I learned how to drive. That movie inspired me to fix up cars and I made sure I kept to my word.

I did a million things to my 350z and changed almost every exterior part to the car. I went from driving literally mm off the floor to eventually bagging it. Here is a pic of it for reference.

Eventually the car was so low I could hardly drive it anywhere. This problem brought me to my first truck. I bought a manual 93 4runner 4x4 with 113k on the odo for 1900 dollars. I had my ups and downs with it due to being an old car but I loved it. I had the famous head gasket blow up on me, so that had to be replaced, but besides that the truck was bullet proof. I decided to throw some 32in falkens and some pro comp alloys. Here is another pic for a reference.

Here is were I came to the wrong conclusion of my truck buying experience. After owning the 2nd gen runner for about a year, I decided I needed a more reliable car (aka a newer car), because I would be commuting to much farther places due to a new job. I decided to sell it and purchased a 2006 NISSAN Xterra SE 4x4. This truck was nothing but headaches. Long story short, the motor spun a rod on my second day of owning it and 9 months later the truck almost killed me and my buddies due to the passenger side wheel bearing and hub assembly falling apart on the way home from pismo beach. I had some 285's, a 2in spacer lift and level 8 rims on it, but I never did anything crazy with it. Here is a pic of the truck.

The week after that happened I decided to drop it all. I put my 350z and xterra both forsale and sold them within a month. On November 6 2016, I purchased my best vehicle to date. The 4runner lol

So here is where the story of my 4runner begins.

Being that I went from 2 cars to 1 car, the mods came in like a fish out of water.

I have seen so many 4runner setups through instagram and facebook. All the really cool looking ones have metal bumpers front and rear, roof top tents, and crazy roof racks. I really think all those things look cool, but I wanted to go with a more OEM+ look. I wanted a truck that is capable of doing all those things with out being so flashy lol.

I originally wanted a 2014+ trail edition due to the projectors and facelift, but finding one for the right price was almost impossible. I stumbled upon this 2012 trail for an awesome price which I couldn't refuse, and i'm actually glad I got a pre face lift 5th gen trail because I see them much much less compared to 2014 trails, which I like. Also, the front end on the 2010-2013 4runner actually grew on me much much more compared to the 2014.

I started off with buying tires. I actually bought tires even before purchasing the 4runner because i was so excited. I did not want to cheap out on this build so I went with the best all around tire I knew at the time and those were the BFG KO2's in 285-70-17.

I also got an amazon spacer lift as well as RRW's RR4 rims in brushed.

I did a couple of trails to test out my new goodies, so of course I had to snap some pictures lol

Shortly after that I picked up an ebay roof rack basket as well as Rocky Road Outfitter Sliders. I went with the Rocky Road Sliders because i liked how they tucked in very closely to the door line for that oem look, but it still gave it that extra protection I needed. These sliders are quality products by the way. I use it as a jack point all the time and they are solid!

I also decided I wanted to make sure my diff didn't get any water in it while crossing rivers and such, so I went with an arb rear diff breather!

I also decided to upgrade my wheel spacers. I bought ebay ones temporarily for test fitting purposes, and once I found that right sizes, I went ahead and bought some reliable spacers. I didn't want to do the body mount chop when I first got the car, (I eventually did it lol) so I went with 1in trail gear spacers in the front and 1.25 spidertrax in the rear. The 1in spacer in the front with my aftermarket wheel was just the right offset to stick out, but not rub the body mount. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the spacers.

Shortly after that, I went on a wheeling trip with some buddies up to the mountains with tons of snow. Another long story short, I got stuck in the snow and had no way getting out, because my buddies were losing traction every time they tried to pull me out. Luckily, someone with a winch drove by and pulled me out.

Well, me being myself, I decided from that moment on, I needed a winch just incase that would happen to me again lol. My dad has had a winch on his 2004 sequoia ever since he bought the car. He went with a warn xd9000 and it has never failed him through out all these years. The kind man that pulled me out of the snow also had a warn xd9000, so I put two and two together and decided I would need to get an xd9000 lol. Well I looked at warn and they recommend gvwr multiplied by 1.5 which comes out to 9450. This is more than what the xd9000 can pull so I went with a Warn zeon10. I really wanted the zeon10s but I told myself I could go synthetic rope later down the line anytime I want, which is why I didn't go with it. I decided to go with a bud built hidden winch receiver so I could keep that oem look!

I also got a cb setup so I can talk to my buddies out on the trail, I don't have any pics of it but you will see it on the truck.

I was really lucky I bought that winch, because the next time I went out on the trail, I almost flipped my truck sliding into a ravine. I decided to drive up a muddy hill and lost traction. I went into a panic and locked my brakes and slipped into it. Luckily, nothing was broken, just my ego and a well learned lesson. Walk the trail before attempting it. Here is a pic

Shortly after that, I decided my spacer lift just wasn't doing its job anymore, I felt like it went from a 3in front lift 2in rear lift to a 2in front 1in rear lol. I decided to go with some bilstein 5100's with ome medium duty 885 springs up front and medium duty 889 in the rear. I also added a half inch top spacer for the front and set the shock to .75 so I can achieve a full 3in lift up front. I love this setup and it rides great. The rear is a little bouncy, but I wasn't expecting it to ride like a cadillac.

Here is a pic after it was installed. It has definitely settled since then, but I felt like it was a 3.5 to 3.75in lift when it was first put on, and now its a perfect 3in.

I recently decided to change out my wheels. I got a really good deal on my RRW's but I always wanted a set of Stealth custom series. So last month I had just enough funds to make the swap. I went with F5's in 17x9-38. I really didn't want to do a bmc, but I also really wanted these wheels, so I decided to just do it. I think it came out really good!

I also decided to get some ragofab ditch brackets and pods. I put those on shortly after as well.

I know my thread has a lot of reading lol but I really enjoy writing about my truck!

I have a lot more in the works. My GF just bought me a flat rack from Baja Rack for my birthday, which will be here this week!
I also plan on getting an arb awning in the very near future. I also want to get a set of maxtrax for my recovery gear as well as change my wire rope to synthetic and get a factor 55 hook.

Ever since I got the new wheels, I have also been wanting to go up to a 295, so that may also happen within the next couple of months so I will have lots of updates for this thread. I will also post the trails and adventures I do in the future!

Thanks for reading everyone!

Yeah I'm really glad I went with the 2012 and trail edition. I think I could have lived without the kdss though because the "kdss lean" really annoys me sometimes LOL

I was super excited to get home from work today because my baja rack arrived! I decided to go with a flat rack without the sunroof cutout so I could use the entire length of the roof for storage. I won't have time to put it on until Saturday because I have work tomorrow. On a side note, i'll be purchasing my awning sometime next week! I also purchased a baja rack jerry can holder from my buddy in vegas, so i'll be headed out there some time soon to pick it up. I'm super excited for the next couple of weeks. Here are some pics of the baja rack in the box. I don't have room to open it up yet lol.

I'll post some pics once its on!

Hi Everyone,

I know nobody really follows my thread, but I haven't updated it in a while because of a loss in my family. My grandfather passed away on May 16, so it's been a really rough time for my family and I. Although i'm sad he is gone, i'm glad he is now resting peacefully with my grandma and uncle.

I finally had some time to update my thread, due to the services being over and my immediate family returning back to their homes.

I put my roof rack on shortly after I got it in the mail. I really like the bajarack, but my only complaint is that it rattles a little bit while driving on the street, but it's dead silent while off roading lol. Here is a pic once it was installed.

While I was on my hiatus, I did a couple of trails to ease my mind from some of the sadness. I went up to one of my local trails called cleghorn. My buddy just got his taco and wanted to test out some of the new goodies he just got done putting on.

Here are some pics from that trip. I didn't really take many pictures.

The following weekend I went out with my buddy and a couple of his buddies. One of his buddies is actually on this forum. I believe he goes my carlomage. He has an awesome trail edition 4runner tastefully modified. If you're reading this carlo, it was awesome meeting you and hopefully we can do another trail soon lol. I snapped a couple of pics for everyone to see!

I have some new mods coming in very shortly. I just ordered my 2000arb awning and brackets, as well as a gobi ladder. They were suppose to call me for my payment information today, but they never did, so I will call them first thing tomorrow morning.

I also purchased a bajarack jerry can holder from my buddy from vegas, so I will be making the drive out to pick it up from him during one of my weekends.

i also plan on making the jump to 295's, so if anyone is interested in my 285-70-17 KO2's, don't be shy to give me a holler lol. 4 of them have about 7k miles on them and 1 is practically brand new. I am asking 1k for all 5!

I plan on running some 295 nitto trail grapplers by mid july!

I'll update once some of my parts come in, thanks for reading!

Soooo my awning came in today! I didn't snap any pics, but I can't put it on until my rhino mounts come in next week. I decided to go with the rhinos mounts because they were on sale on amazon. I really hope they work with my baja rack lol, it looks like it should though.

I also plan on hitting some trails this weekend. I plan on heading out to gorman on saturday and cleghorn again on sunday! I'll take some pics for everyone to see!

It's cool to see your truck next to @carlomagne truck, they are so different in appearance yet there really isn't that much different about the trucks themselves.

I'm of course biased to the 10-13 front end!

lol been there

Mine when it was at its prime static... custom paint, fiberglass diffuser, fiberglass side and front splitters and eventually ground my stillen swaybar flat and bent the ears on my front subframe and then bagging it after that with airlift management and a bag over coil setup. Then folded in my front fender rolling to low thru a meet and had that fixed, got annoyed, went to wekfest, and then sold it a month later. Lost my ass but oh well
 photo IMG_8936_zpsffe9y4o3.jpg

And building a 51 chevy truck right now. Bagged and body dropped on a s10 frame, tig welded 4 link, tubular control arms, heimed no toe steering, 4 wheel disc brakes, posi, mildly built 4 bolt main chevy 350, titanium drag blocks, the list goes on and on.
Truck only weighs 3200 lbs and hopefully I'll have about 350hp when the motor is done.

Sorry for the thread derail low car things got me excited

Wow mad props rolling static like that with your G! Damn I always wanted to build a c10 with an LS but thats way into my future. I definitely miss driving a low car though! I'm looking to pick an is300 sometime in the future!

I have lots of updates, just an fyi, I just haven't had time to take pics! I did a trail today, which ended up being a huge 4runner run and I had no idea! I unfortunately didn't take any pictures, but it was definitely a fun filled day!

Hey everyone, quick update!

I did a suicide trip last saturday to vegas. I visited my friend and picked up my baja rack jerry can holder. I think it looks awesome with my awning. My gf also decided she wanted to do some shopping while we were there, so we kinda of killed 2 birds with one stone LOL

I finally got some pics with everything on! Now I'm just waiting for my gobi ladder to come in. It's about a 4 week wait. I'm really happy with how everything came out. I was in a bit of a pickle when it came to choosing what size awning to go with, but i'm glad i went with the 2000 instead of the 2500. The 2000 is just the right size imo and the 2500 looks a little too big on the truck.

Here is a pic of the awning in my garage when I first got it. I also like the new design that arb made for their awning. It is less bulky compared to their old design as well as competitors.

Here is a blurry pic of the awning and jerry can holder on at night when I put them on. My apologies I take pictures with my messed up iphone 6, so the quality isn't the greatest lol

Of course, I had to snap some during the day as well.

I'm really glad I went with the rhino mounts instead of baja rack. The awning is at the perfect height when it's setup. My buddy has the baja rack mounts for awnings, and his awning sits a little high when he sets it up. Here is a pic of the box lol because I forgot take pics of the actual mounts. Rhino definitely makes quality stuff!

I don't have any plans this weekend, but i'm sure something will come up and i'll be out on the trail some where.

I am also getting closer to moving to 295's so keep a look out for more updates!
