Smile Thank you 4Runner

Good day all,

On January 30 2017, the reckless driving of an individual driving a pickup truck equipped with a snow plow attempted to pass aggressively my wife which was driving our 2015 4Runner Sr5. She had just dropped our daughter to daycare but my then 7 months old son was well strapped into his car seat.

The pickup truck driver attempted to pass her to the left and miss judged his truck plow size..The result was that he hit the back left of the 4Runner with his right side of the plow.

My wife was immediately thrown to the right and rolled in the ditch. All airbags deployed and landed on her left.

The accident occurred at no more than 50 km/h and caused a total loss in damages. My wife sustain minor injuries. My son did not get even a scratch.

bottom line is the following.

-My 4Runner had the weight and structural strength to protect it's occupants.
-Follow the speed limit.
-Please take extra seconds to verify if your children are safely strapped to their seat. AND safely attached using the latch!

So as a result of all this, after months of research, test driving the new tacoma and Honda Pilot. I could not find a similar vehicle which could fulfill my needs... I am now the proud owner of a new 4Runner limited in Silver.

Safe drive all

Dr

Not that any of us ever want to be put into a position to "test" the multiple safety features that are built into our 4Runners, but glad to hear that your SR5 did its job in protecting its driver and occupant - they are precious cargo!

Hope you don't get the opportunity to test any of those same safety features in your new Limited, and that you get to enjoy it for many years to come.

Thanks for all the nice reply. Family is good and that s the main thing.
Tow truck driver stopped and attempted to get my wife out. While doing so he used an axe to smash all windows. Of note, all airbags remained fully inflated and had a hard time to wiggle her out stuck between the side, knee and steering airbag. The truck driver was charged with reckless riving under the Highway traffic act...

@DoctorJoe As everyone else has said, glad your family is ok. You also make an excellent point about car seats and being sure they are properly installed. Well worth the sucking up of pride and taking a 5-10 minute detour to the local police or fire station for those that are 1st timers.

Here is a link for those who may need to find a install check near them.

Ditto the comments about your family being ok. That was scary I'm sure! Congrats on your new truck.

That's why I bought a 4Runner.

Almost a year ago had a drunk driver hit me head on in my 12 Xterra. Since they are no longer made, 4Runner took its place. Bought it without ever test driving one.

I'm glad to hear your wife and child were not hurt.

It sounds like the truck with the plow may have got too close to the back of your wife's 4Runner before starting to pass. I can't stand it when a driver does that.

Holy crap! Glad your family was okay after that. I can't even imagine how terrifying it must be rolling a vehicle at speed. Good to see it did a hell of a job protecting them.

Wow! Glad your family is okay.

Definitely a good reminder to make sure the car seats are installed properly. I have a 7 week old daughter and had my car seat for my T4R and the one in the wife's Rogue checked just in case. Better safe than sorry.

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would revive my post from 2017 when my wife was hit by a snowplow totalling my 2015 4runner SR5. We eventually purchased a 2017 T4R limited.

I had the vehicle for over 4 years now and had a few hiccups since then which convinced me to get a new 2021 TRD off road.

I started to have rust on the back door right above the 4runner sign. It was covered under warranty and dealer repainted the whole door. A year later it is stating to rust again. The bottom front doors are also bubbling up just a little. All 4 disks and pads needs to be changed since I have not used it much during the last year due to covid and working from home.

I visited my dealership end of May 2021 and given the incredible resale value of our T4R I could not pass in ordering a new one. 3 months later, I am taking possession of another gray metallic T4R TRD Off road, 2 km on the odometer!. My first one with KDSS and all the off road goodies. Of note, the little guy in the photo was 6 months old back in 2017 and was the rear right passenger in the wreck in the photo above. check your car seats and be safe on the road. Those heavy 4Runner will protect you well but drive them safely! Cheers

Congrats on the new ride! I remember when you posted this and like others, passenger protection was one of the many reasons I chose a ‘Runner. And like many others I’ll probably never drive anything else…
