Anyone care to post a "how-to" on full installation of anytime backup camera
I purchased the anytime backup camera kit from BriGuyDIY, whom has been very accommodating and helpful, however, I have a brand new 2017 4runner with less than 4k miles, and if I'm going to start taking shit apart, ESPECIALLY the center console, I want to know exactly what I'm getting myself into. My previous car was a 2001 maxima, and did a fair amount of custom fabrication on it (mostly related to audio installs), but it was an older used car, and breaking clips and whatever wasn't a big deal...
BriguyDIY has a pretty straight-forward picture guide on his website as far as removing the center console, but I am still a little skeptical as far as mounting the switch I've purchased from aironboard... Some of you may think I sound ridiculous, but ripping away trim panels on a 4runner with 50 or 100k+ miles has a totally different feeling vs a literally brand new truck that you drove off the lot with 1 mile on it. I would feel much more comfortable if someone had step by step instructions for installation of the switch and camera kit on a new 4runner. I haven't found any picture threads or instructional videos for something of the sort, even though it seems pretty simple...
I think this is a totally beneficial upgrade that can be done with little to no harm to the vehicle or downsides (my type of upgrades=no downsides)...I just am not the type to take an experimental approach on a vehicle this new and expensive. I was graced with help on my purchase and don't want to **** anything up.
I hope I am not met with negativity as I presume there are a fair amount of new 4runner owners with little modification experience and this is would truly be a nice feature (especially if done properly and made to look stock).
I have a TRD off-road premium edition so the only stock switch locations I have access to are on the left side of the steering wheel.
You guys are awesome. I have learned so much from you and I greatly appreciate any input. Cheers.
where are you putting the switch? the center console with the shifter just pulls right up, all you have to do is unscrew the transfer case lever and just lift it up
Aob wires, RED, Blue to the long Anytime Backup Camera long wire and Green wire to 2nd wire, black to ground.
1st picture without harness, 2nd pic with harness, 3rd pic shows pieces removed to access head unit. There's 4 bolts you need to remove if I remember correctly. Ignore the mess near the steering column.
Age or mileage shouldn't have anything to do with it. I tore my dash apart the second day I owned my new 2016 TEP. Brian's photos tell you most of what you need, and the thread here in the 5th gen forum on installing the reverse camera dongle show you all the wiring details for the AOB switch.
As soon as it isn't 90+°, I'll be pulling mine apart again to put in the front camera and wiring for the trailer camera.

BriGuyDIY has all the videos and info you need to install it. Having less than 4000 miles on your 2017 doesn't change the instructions any. How does hearing from 20 of your closest internet friends (translation = total strangers) change that?
FYI, I hope you don't consider this a "negative" post. The bottom line is your are going to have to "just do it".
Can I ask... is this simply to flip the camera on whenever one feels like it?
Yes, basically that is what the any time backup camera mod is. You can turn on the backup camera anytime, not just when you put it in reverse.
There are a couple of different options where you can add additional inputs to it as well, so you could watch a video on it or install more camera's or whatever you want to display on the nav screen.
Did you ever install your front camera? I'm curious as to where you mounted it.
Nope, not yet. We are leaving for a month long cross-country trip tomorrow, so it won't be for a while.
And it's still been miserably hot and humid here in Ohio. It is 9:15 AM, and 83° with 85% humidity already today!
