I bought mine used w 58k miles and an extended warranty of 30k miles. I did my first oil change after reading about some dealer nightmare stories, and discovered the existing filter was shorter than the correct one. I thought I was given the wrong filter at the parts counter, but discovered the existing filter was the wrong one. The factory skid plate fasteners were also stripped, so right then and there I vowed the dealer oil change monkeys would never again touch my truck. It's pitiful they can't even replace a few bolts without stripping them.
That is the reason for my old school 3k mile oil change intervals. I know tell me I'm foolish.....but the $35 I spend on an oil change doing it myself, is not that bad IMHO.
It surely gives me pause when looking at a used vehicle with "all factory service performed at the dealer". These days, that and a nickel, MIGHT get you a stick of gum. Im really getting tired of no accountability in the dealer and automotive service world. It would almost be worth a snoop camera under your vehicle to have some recourse when you have a complaint. It would serve them right getting caught in they're bold faced lies.

Ooh got them in writing. Yeah if it was me, they'd at least be covering a nice ext warranty.

The EXACT Same Thing Happened To Me
FIRST oil change for a 2018 4Runner at 4500 miles and the dealer used a RAV4 filter which is 3/4 of an inch shorter than the correct filter. I only took it to the dealer because I felt stupid passing up the free maintenance. Now I feel stupid for having it done.
How did this turn out for you guys?
What did you do?
Did the dealer do anything to fix the situation?
In my case, the dealer is only offering to complete a leak down test and an oil pressure test to identify any potential damage.
I am sick to my stomach.

Ah, yes... Time to dig up another old thread...
Has anyone else picked up oil filters from their local dealership only to find the filter part number does not match the packaging?
I was told by the guy at the parts counter that "...that's the right filter"

That is the correct filter. The number on the filter is for the filter only, the YYZA5 number is for the kit that includes the rubber gaskets and plastic filter drain tool. You're good to go with that filter!

That seems to be the general consensus on Instagram as well. I wish Toyota had some kind of "official" document that states this - even if it was on the box. Otherwise it is just super confusing to people like me.

I do all my own service and maintenance. If some subsequent buyer tried to discount the vehicle price for not having the work done by a dealer, I would show them my wife's logs and laugh. Vehicle now has 265K miles on it.

Toyota has an online parts catalog where you could have checked the parts numbers.

One would think it is blatantly obvious when placing the smaller filter media on the mount that even though it fits diameter wise it is too sort. I recently changed out my plastic filter housing for the metal one and had to change out the mount of course with the one that comes inside the plastic housing unit. Again, pretty obvious that even though the 4Runner filter fits on there fine diameter wise its too long for the mount that came with it... kind of surprised that even oil change monkeys as some people call them cannot see something is up but who knows - maybe the mechanic gives that to them and says have at it boys, don't forget the oil part thats the most important !

I'd be pissed and concerned too, OP. But the bright side is that you have a new vehicle and there's not much crap getting into the oil due to blowby, etc. If I had to envision a scenario where my engine did not have filtered oil for 5K miles, it would be on a new engine. I think you'll be fine.
