Road Trips: Where to go and What to see?

I'm hoping this will become a sticky, but I thought regardless this would be good thread to start. I've asked for input into road trip destinations before and I'm planning on consolidating them here for everyone to enjoy.

Vermont & Cape Cod, MA

This year the wife and I are heading up into the North East. We'll be driving from Indianapolis and would like to hit Vermont and Cape Cod, MA. Ideally i'd like to set up camp some-place central so we can do several day trips in the area and minimize the setup/breakdown time for camp.

I believe there are some scenic byways and forest road trails around lake Champlain? I am waiting on my Vermont Tourist Travel pack at the moment from the VT Tourist Board.

We're aiming for the first 2 weeks of September.

Vermont:
Maine:
  • Cape Cod

I greatly appreciate the input and experience from previous travelers and locals!

I love the Silverton/Durango Colarado area. And of course the typical Moab Utah if you have never been there. Great views and things to do.

Not Vermont but the White Mountains are pretty spectacular. I'd say early-mid September would still be a tad early for any foliage at higher elevations but still cool. You could go up Mount Washington as well.

For Cape Cod. If you've never been, take the fast ferry over to Nantucket. You can make it a day trip. We did it on our way home from our Washington DC road trip a few years ago.

If you want something better, come over to Nova Scotia and explore the Cape Breton Highlands. You won't get that anywhere on the Eastern seaboard of North America. It's obviously a bit farther but the USD/CAD exchange rate is still around 80 cents so very favourable for you. Heading to Nova Scotia it's even worth exploring taking the ferry from Portland to Yarmouth.
