Re-read this thread, didnt see if anyone answered the poster that asked if this is a problem with the shift-knob TC, the electronic TC or both?

Just had a leak fixed in mine about 3 weeks ago. ‘12 Limited. Leak was on the input seal from the transmission. It started super slow. Had the dealership fix it the second I smelled gear oil outside the vehicle.

My leak was with the electronic 4x4 knob in the SR5. Leak was the rear output of transfer case, right where the rear drive shaft connects.

Bought this 2011 and completely missed this leak. Think it's leaking between the transmission and the TC. Anyone have any idea from the pictures?
Any idea what this will cost to fix?

Transfer case leak at front seal.
I posted this in another thread, but this may be a better location...
Rather than creating a new thread, I thought I would post here. I’ve read several transfer case leak threads. There are different issues I guess. Some have seals leak and others have the gasket/rtv leak between the two castings. I just noticed the leak recently. I just turned over 40k miles on my 16 TEP.
The dealership confirmed the leak and stated it was the front seal. They ordered the parts and I’ll take it in next week to have the work done. Here is my question. The tech said when the front seal is leaking, transfer case fluid can get into the transmission and he recommended a transmission fluid flush at >$400... I argued that if that happens because of a defective part covered under warranty, that should be covered too. I made no progress with the tech or service writer. I’ll save the bickering for when I return. Is that possible though? I would think there is a corresponding seal on the transmission. In order for the TC fluid to get into tranny, wouldn’t the tranny seal be leaking as well? Thoughts appreciated!
Sorry about the rotation...

What a joke. I think I would’ve asked for that service recommendation in writing.

Yeah. The more I think about it the more preposterous it sounds. Just a cash grab for unnecessary service... Unless someone knows different...?

Leak may be related to a TSB I found.

Possible t case leak on 2016
Hello all, this is my first post here. I came over from Tacoma world and a 2015 2nd gen Tacoma. I’ve been lurking, reading and learning a lot, and I finally have a reason to post. I recently purchased a new to me 2016 trd off-road with 18k miles on it on Monday. I haven’t even gotten the chance to really go over the truck yet. I did crawl under the the truck last night just checking things out and found a slight what looks like oil leak coming from one of the t case bolts. I’m still on the first tank of gas, haven’t used 4wd or anything yet... also should note that the truck was purchased from a Honda dealership, if that matters with warranty or anything. I know I at least have 6 months or 6k miles. But idk if this would be covered by Toyota at all. Figured I would just post here real quick since I found this thread and see what you all thought. Thanks..I do have a couple pics. Trying to figure out how to upload them

I haven’t gotten a chance to yet... I tried finding a torque specs diagram for the t case and all I could find was one for the 2nd gen Tacoma which looks like its only 8 ft lb. I’m assuming it’s going to be the same as that or close to it

I haven’t gotten under mine in a little bit but last time I had it serviced I was told the output shaft seal was leaking. They called me in to see it and it was dripping all over my transfer case skid.
I’m going to have it serviced next oil change or whenever I can set up a time. I’ve got 88k on mine.

Yep, almost exactly the same as my t-case leak looked. My post here -- dealer ultimately replaced the seal on the rear output of the t-case under warranty: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/2864133-post11.html
