Post Aftermarket Exhaust / Cold Air Intake

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sure this has been talked about in the past for as you can tell I've recently just become active on this forum. I didn't bother changing these items out on my 14' TEP but I feel like I have less power in my 17' TRDORP. I am pushing the same size tires as I had on my 14' I just don't feel the power in the 17'. I want to see what other people might be running as combos for their aftermarket exhaust and cold air intake. I've youtubed some videos of the 5th gen exhaust sounds but it really is hard to tell because I find different videos of the same exhaust set up yet they sound differently. If anyone has a video clip of their combo that would be sweet to. I know my 4runner will never be a hot rod but man I don't remember getting on the highway and feeling like I had no power.

Same lift/wheels & tires on your 14? I know you said size is the same

There will always be some variations between engines and output but i doubt its anything you could measure outside of a engine lab/dyno. If you did have the same mods then my guess is its your perception, don't expect and exhaust and air intake to help by the butt dyno.

The 2017 is slightly heavier which will affect your power perception.

K&N Drop in, Borla cat back, and a Sprint booster V2 woke mine up.

Noted. I'm putting mine on a road trip come this weekend to Colorado and I will track my mileage and how she runs power wise through the mountains that way I know what my next mod is when I get back. I really want to do my lights but power might be more important to me

What makes the 17 heavier?

I'm running a 295/55R20 now. Was running a 285/65R18 before. 32.6" to 32.8" so not really a huge difference.

I wouldn't focus so much on the diameter of the tire, but the weight of your wheel/tire combo. If what you're running now is heavier, it could be noticeable especially since you're multiplying that by 4.

Incorrect. The 2014 Trail curb weight is the exact same as a 2018 TRD Off-Road, 4750lbs. And every year between.

So I just did some googling:

Toyo MT 295/55/20: 72lbs (holy crap, that's a heavy tire)
20" XD grenades: 38lbs
110lbs wheel/tire
168lbs over stock (for all 4)

That is a heavy combo. You're paying the consequences in the way it drives now.

For comparison

Stock setup:
TRD ORP/Trail OEM wheels: 29lbs
GRANDTREK AT20 - SIZE: P265/70R17 - 39lbs
68lbs wheel/tire combo

My setup
BFG KO2 285/70/17: 58lbs
Konig Countersteer type X: 20.5lbs
78.5lbs wheel/tire
42lbs total over stock (for 4)

Intake and exhaust will provide a negligible amount of performance.

The OEM intake is already cold-air, so any upgrade to that will just make it louder, but not actually appreciably faster. Exhaust is the same. I did an exhaust because I wanted to reroute the pipe but I didn't notice a performance increase.

Thanks for the pointer on that. I knew I was going to a heavier combo, but the combo I had before was 91 pounds. I guess 76 pounds more for the set of four makes a bigger difference than I thought. I know that about the COI, I'm just wondering if say the K&N or maybe an AFE (not sure of anyone with one on the 4Runner but I had on several other trucks and loved it) would just upgrade even 5-10 HP and then with an exhaust. I feel like even 15 HP total would be huge for moving this tank.

I don't know what kind of mileage you are at yet but could also be that your '17 is not fully broken in yet?

In all my previous vehicles with bumpers, skids, etc. The single biggest notice at the pedal was my wheel/tire combo.

I added an AFE CAI on my FJ and I didn't really notice the difference. There was a kind of placebo effect in that it was louder. Theoretically I suppose a flat filter vs. a conical filter could make a difference. I don't know if anyone has done a dyno before and after each to measure. It may add some power but high cost per horsepower.

Another thing you could consider is a sprint booster or other throttle position modifier. It adds no power but makes it to where you don't have to mash the skinny pedal. For some it makes the 4Runner's power more palatable.

Best of luck man!
