Using blank fuse slots on factory fuse block to create new circuits

It seems everyone uses the very common add a circuit mini fuse taps to add new circuits for small accessories/switches.

I previously had a Jetta where a more OEM option was available by utilizing the factory fuse block and simply adding wire to the back of the block and adding a fuse. Check this link out to get the idea:
Addition of extra circuits to the Volkswagen Golf / Jetta / Passat / EOS / Scirocco / Rabbit fuse box | my-gti.com

Is this not possible on the 4Runner fuse blocks? Has anyone tried this?

How many accessories are you planning to run that is going to require you to tap a circuit? I have 2 slots I'm tapping into and everything else is powered via a 12 circuit bluesea fuse block in the rear wheel well. If you plan on tapping more than 2 or 3 slots, I would look into running a fuse block inside somewhere.

I used empty slot in under the dash fuse block for ignition ON power floor ambient light and air thermometer. Did not need a add a fuse just a new fuse for blank spot #5.

There is a thread on this forum somewhere (sorry, have not searched) detailing the difficulty of opening up the fuse box to access the back side. It was in relation to replacing the main fuse link integral to the box. If I remember correctly it is not impossible to do, but close and the person who did it had to destroy the box to do it.
