Sunroof / Moonroof closes (almost) then opens halfway

So I pulled up to work this morning and after trying to close my sunroof, it stopped at the almost closed position then slide to the half way open spot. Did some looking around on the forums and haven't come across this issue yet (will try more during lunch). I found some instructions on how to reset the sunroof, based on info from the 4th gen thread, but it requires you to have the sunroof closed and use the tilt button...

Anyone have any thoughts?

I'd check the track, and make sure there isn't any debris caught somewhere near the spot it stops at. Sometimes they kick open again as a safety feature if they feel resistance.

Disconnect battery for 10 minutes or so.

If there's nothing on the tracks... there's a re-initialization proceedure in your owner's manual for the 5th gen, section 3-5, "when your moonroof does not close properly" It doesn't state that the moonroof has to be closed to start. There's a proceedure with the slide button and one for the tilt.... here's what it says about the slide

1. stop the vehicle
2. press and hold the slide switch in the closed position,
the moonroof will close, reopen, and pause for approximately 10 seconds, then it will close again, tilt up and pause for approx 1 second. finally it will tilt down, open and close
3. check that the moonroof is completely closed, and then release the switch

good luck!

Working! Thanks everyone for the help, @nb rob 's post seemed to do the trick. I like the solution too, "If it doesn't work right, just hold the switch down forever until it does."

amazing! i just bought a used 4runner and had this issue. the car had a brand new battery, maybe that's why. i fixed it by opening the sunroof and then just holding close for a long time!

Thanks so much for this fix. Mine would only close if I got it close, about 3 in away from being closed, and then give it little bumps and nudges with the button until it was all the way closed.

I opened the moonroof to 100%, followed the directions above by holding the button for 10 seconds and then continuing to hold. Not sure if I had to continue to hold or not. But the system is reset and the moonroof is closing properly.

Thanks so much for this advice so many years ago!
