Your 2018 Guide to the Spelling, Pronunciation, and History of "Cavalry"
Hi All,
I'd like to take a moment to attempt to head off some future trainwrecks with the word Cavalry.
First and foremost I see a HUGE spelling probelm ahead of us. I suspect we will even see a common ally in Camaro owners as we head into the great beyond where people like to insert random "E"s - such as Calvery and Camero. This is a sure sign the poster has a very large mullet and drinks Miller Light beer. Avoid the temptation to adopt this misspelling at all costs. The correct spelling is C-A-V-A-L-R-Y.
DEFINITION - Cavalry were soldiers or warriors who fought mounted on horseback. Cavalry were historically the most mobile of the combat arms. An individual soldier in the cavalry is known by a number of designations such as cavalryman, horseman, dragoon or trooper.
ETYMOLOGY - Cavalry (from French cavalerie, cf. cheval 'horse') or horsemen
Now, with that said - the SECOND biggest issue that I see is confusion with the word Calvary. Origin and history of calvary is the name of the mount of the Crucifixion, late 14c., from Latin Calvaria (Greek Kraniou topos), translating Aramaic gulgulta "place of the skull" (see Golgotha). Rendered literally in Old English as Heafodpannan stow. This is not the correct spelling of the new for 2018 4Runner either.
Lastly, pronunciation: Resist the urge to pronunce Cavalry as Calvary. It will sound like you are trying to talk with a bag of marbles or a very large dip of tobacco in your mouth. Avoid this at all costs. Make sure to enunciate the V before the L, it will help ensure the proper meaning is received.
I look forward to your contributions and future linkings to this thread to help keep our newcomer bretheren in line when referring to this new and exciting color.
-Thank you,
-Ryan (2016 Member of the Year)

as a fellow logophile who drinks said beverage i must insist, my good sir: Miller Lite. if it were spelled properly it might be mistaken for something tasteful.
