Bears and coolers

Just kidding...
The only thing that works for bears is a steel bear box like the ones in the Sierra campgrounds. I like to leave a few of those bear proof backpacking cans with rocks in them just to piss the bears off. I takes them a long time to get those open...
Rotomolded coolers have changed the game when it comes to bear resistance.
Yeti coolers fit the bill and they cost quite a few bills too.

As others have noted, I try and keep it simple and just lay out a sleep pad in the back with the seats down and sleeping pads, cargo goes to the front seat. Would love to get built in storage and sleeping one day.

One of the best investments I have ever made for my 4runner. Plus if you buy the side bumpers, you can use it as a normal air mattress too. Fits perfectly snug in the back of the 4runner. Give them a call and ask for the owner. He will guide you to the correct size, and probably throw in some free-bees as well! Great product with great customer service.

do u just plop this mattress on or do you make a flat panel underneath it first?

Fold down the rear seats, and you're ready to roll. The wheel well cut outs fit perfectly.

Only minor complaint is the top of the mattress pad is a bit stiff. other that that it's amazing.

2nd row Air mattress

Anyone use a product like this? I am 5'9" and the wifey is 5.0ft. I am currently using a twin air mattress with the 2nd row folded. However, in the future I want to install a fridge on a slide so the twin mattress will no longer work. I am trying to avoid getting a heavy RTT. If its not so comfortable, I'll be going to a, tried and true, ground tent.

I've now got over a hundred nights (not in a row) using the leveling platform noted in one of my above posts, between my old '14 TE and my current '17 SR5 and my wife's current '17 SR5. Continues to work great for two-person or solo trips.

It's worth noting again, because I think 3rd row people don't always understand, if you don't have a 3rd row and don't have a cargo tray, the rear seats don't fold flush with the cargo area floor, so you need to have a filler of some sort to raise the cargo area floor about 2.5".

I think for $30 in wood and an hour of labor, this is the best upgrade you can do to sleep in the back. Perfectly flat, copious room. On my last solo 11 day trip in March '18 I was able to renegade camp quickly and easily every night because I was totally self contained. Several nights I let the truck run all night to keep warm as it was in the high 20s - benefits you don't get with ground tents or RTT.

Here's a few more pics of the pallet (and 8 gal Rubbermaid Action Packers in the foot wells) that drop in there to make it flat:

With gear:

Gear stowed and 'full' mattress and bags out for two person use:

Gear and double stacked Thermarests for one person use:

Also I just did this and it is a game changer:

Ultimate camping mod- rear window up / down and hatch pop with ignition off!

Multi function bed

here's the set up i built for my trip to utah in november, 2 slide out drawers, a slide out "tail gate" to cook on and a hidden compartment that is under the bed i put all my expensive gear in. Was able to fit a Queen size 4" memory foam bed topper. slept great

It's been almost 2 years since purchase. I can't recall. Call them, they will know right away.

If it's just me I might sleep inside the truck. I'm 6'-1" and I never have any trouble stretching out. At night I move the heavy stuff around to clear one side of the car. I put a few soft bags down in the foot well and enough soft stuff in the rise where the seat bottoms go to level everything out. I have a foam pad and a self inflating Thermarest pad. More blankets below me if needed. I use a down bag if it's cool. I open a couple of windows an inch and sleep tight.

If we both go I pitch a tent.

I've slept on just a ground tarp with enough tarp to wrap over me if it gets windy or it rains. I never seem to be bothered by the coyotes, desert rats or scorpions that run around the desert at night.

Here in So Cal it doesn't get that cold so I can camp in a good tent or the car with the windows open a bit. In the desert it gets too windy for a RTT. I use a good 3 or 4-season tent and tie it down 8 to 10 ways against the wind.
I’m 6’3”, thanks for the seat removal tip!

I have a Limited and the back seats slide forward and back. Does anyone know if they fold up so that the back part of the seats fold flat? I can't figure it out if it does.
