I'm having the same problem now but when I shift into drive it slow to engage and when I put it in reverse I get blinking brackets around the (R).

very frustrating being this is brand-new with 500 miles on it. though I did put a remote start in today so maybe that had something to do with it?

found out today dealershit screwed up...

I own a 2017 4Runner with like 21K miles now. Barely any miles cos we only use for road trips since I have my other daily driver.

This weekend went on a family trip and on the way back, right after refilling gas those three lights came on. So we pulled over at the next rest stop and checked everything seemed fine. Drove home coz there wasn't any other choice. We also noticed a rattling, metal clanking sound past few days. Highly noticeable when acceleratin, decelaratin or cruising around 40-50mph.

So drop off the car to the dealership this morning and they came back to me saying all the oil leaked out. They gave me a rental so I could go back to the office, they will clean up the mess and refill the oil. I am sure the light and noise will go away but what about any possible damages internally?? Is this something I should just let go??? Basically drove over 200miles with low oil, and this is the 2nd year so no more Toyota care or so...

Anyone have any advice on how to deal with this??? I am not sure if want another year of free oil changes...

Most CELs will trigger a whole slew of lights on your dash and it is impossible to diagnose without pulling the codes.

Autozone, Advance, O'Reilly etc. will loan you a code reader that will show you generic codes (don't work well with European cars, but fine for US and Asian vehicles). These codes will point you in the right direction.

Once you get the codes, look them up on the internet and you'll be able to resolve it.

If you don't have access to a code reader - and haven't gotten gas recently - then you'll need a trip to the dealer. Not much we can do without the codes.

Not sure why you posted in this thread. BUT that is not good.

You had a bunch of lights come on and you pulled over and checked and "everything seemed fine". Did you check the oil level at that time? Was your oil light on?

ALL of the oil was gone? I have a lot of questions. If you had no oil in your engine and drove it and heard metal clanking sounds your motor may be toast.

Not sure if this comment still applies but I just installed a 3" Toytec suspension lift myself and the terrain select came on flashing after. Would not shift into 4wd and would show an error message on the screen saying multi-terrain select could not be enabled. Took it to the dealer, they scanned it and just nothing wrong but just triggered the light after install. Dealer reset with no cost. Hope this helps someone.

Had a quick look under neath and all 4 corners doesn't look like anything is damaged or any wires broken etc. Anyone have any ideas on this? I was thinking the truck took the day like a champ but now it isn't seeming so .

I did not use the Multi Terrain Select option when out in the woods only 4 low/high and crawl control when going down the steep snowy/icy bits.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great as I am trying to avoid the dealer at all costs lol. Its under warranty as the truck is a 2017 but I do not want them working on it, only me.

To give some light and positivity to this thread I had an awesome day and was able to snap some good pics as well. Will be going out again this Sunday for an even longer trip regardless if this is fixed or not .

2014 Trail 40,000 miles. I had CEL , Trac and flashing multi terrain flashing come on last night after it was sitting in the driveway for 8 hours. I checked gas cap ,looked for any sign of wire chewing . Nothing . Drove it around the block, ran fine, checked all fluids. All good. I pulled the + battery cable for 5 minutes. Lights are out truck runs fine. We will see.

Bad wheel sensor/wheel sensor wiring is a possibility. I am more impressed with the fact that you only have 40k on a 7 year old truck

Just an update. The lights came back on. However the truck was really hard starting. Engine wouldn't catch except with long cranking. Called the dealer. Took it in. Guess what? Improperly installed O ring during the fuel pump replacement for the recall. One good note. The loaner was an Avalon with 8 speed and 6 cylinder. I put that baby in sport mode and it was a rocket.

Related issue - the air filter connector hose became dislodged from the air filter box. The duct clamps were not aligned properly and it pulled right off, resulting in an unusual amount of air flow going in and making a "fuel mixture imbalance" (P0171; P0174). Tightened it all back up and had to do a farm fix on the air filter box...those TOYO clamps popped right off because of the cheap plastic. Frustrating.

Reset the CEL with the FIXD OBDII device and app. We shall see.

Get a new gas cap and start there. It’s like $30. I had a rav4 and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. I take it to autozone because it was just a few blocks away to have them hook it up to their code reader for free sure enough it was my gas cap. Bought a new one from Toyota no more issues. My 4Runner had the exact same lights you do come on outta nowhere and guess what. You guessed it it was the gas cap!

Going through the same thing myself right now. Out of nowhere I got a CEL, trac off solid and green multi terrain select flashing.

Took it the dealer and it was a faulty neutral position switch. $540 plus tax for the part. Part number 84540-35060
I wish it was as simple as the gas cap needing to be replaced.
I had the same thing with my 2020 TRD OR. I had been in 4 low with rear locker on. When going back to 4 hi, I accidentally had it in Park instead of Neutral and was trying unsuccessfully to shift to 4 High. I tried to “horse” my transfer shifter a bit to much and got the light show on the dash. We could not clear the code with our $20 OBD scanner. I figured out I was in park, shifted main shifter to N then Xfer shifter to 4 Hi and drove an hour out of the wilderness and back in to cell service range. No matter what I tried, I could not clear the message, which also included the “Call Dealer” on the display. Finally we decided to pull the Neg wire off off the battery for 5 minutes and reconnect. Lo and Behold it worked. All lights cleared and never came back on.

My layman’s theory is that my rough treatment of the Transfer shifter created the faulty neutral position error. It obviously was “stuck” near the neutral position while I was in “Park”. No issues in the 700 miles since that incident.

What was your fix?
2018 4Runner TRD Premium 103k
I drove 3 hours on Saturday no problem Sunday I went to work no issues, start my truck to let it warm up after and so it began. Solid CEL and TRAC OFF, with the flashing multi-terrain light. I grabbed our scanner and to my surprise I had not a single trouble code. In almost 10 years of working in a retail Auto-Shop I've never had lights with no codes. Our scanner is a brand new launch (can't remember the model) and fully updated. We have an Autel as well, however it was dead (people dont know how to plug stuff in) I'll try that one in the AM. I'll for sure try a gas cap and disconnecting the negative terminal, and look into the neutral position switch. Vehicle runs and drives seeming fine but it's a bad time to be without TRAC Control in Ohio lol. Any new advice, thoughts, fixes etc... would be hugely appreciated. Closest Dealer is an Hour from me and I'm strapped for cash, so will definitely do what's needed to fix myself. I'll update after I have had more time to tinker tomorrow.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
