The implication that air bags would not function properly with other bumpers is nonsense. There is a very small window where the crumple zone of the arb bumpers would have any measurable difference. There is little crumple zone in the oem Toyota bumper. It takes place in the frame horns.

They may function too easy with a steel bumper, because of the increased deceleration, ARB is only company that tests to make sure it doesn't impact airbag performance

Airbags still function..with a winch/plate bumper. There is just more force transferred to the cabin.. so they go off easier. It's not really an airbag thing, but an energy transfer thing. Airbags should go off with the same amount of force... it's just that the force will be higher with a hidden winch or plate bumper with all else being equal. There is basically a shock absorber removed.

Umm... Not true... No airbag deployment. And there was no frame horn damage. (just about $6K of OEM body parts, paint and labor)

Good God People!......If I was that paranoid about safety I'd be rollin' a hideous VOLVO! If you like the Warn, buy it! It can't be any more ''Scary'' than the other 3 options of this style and the Price is excellent.

Pics of your inner bumper? (that's what we're talking about - not the plastic cover, the plastic has no value at all in impact resistance). Normally the aluminum bumper must have failed if whatever you hit caused damage the hood like that. Hard to tell though. If you hit something taller than the inner bumper it might have just missed it entirely. Kinda looks like that's what happened here. Seems hard to see how you can collapse the front aluminum bumper and not set off the airbags.

Do you think something different would have happened had you used a SSO bumper as compared to a Warn bumper. That's really the only question that matters. Is ARB's claim that its bumper is SRS compatible meaningful?

To give you an example:

Note that the frame collapsed and the bumper didn't. So... umm... true?

I know this is a Warn Bumper, but i wonder how it could be modified for a smittybuilt winch.....

If you want a Smittybilt why get the Warn bumper? This bumper appears to be almost identical to my SSO and the Smittybilt works with it. Prices are comparable.

I personally wouldn't want those two big holes in the front of the bumper to funnel dirt, water, road grime, etc. onto the winch.

Bill

It should just bolt in. Basically all small winches 8-1200lb have the same mount pattern and same design. They're all interchangeable. The only ones that won't fit are the oddballs like the 8274 and the powerplant that has a compressor built in. They're just physically too big.

You realize that winches are made for that right? The holes are there to access the winch clutch.

Just to clarify. That pic should have resulted in the crush cans being crushed/bent and the aluminum bumper being tweaked in some way. The frame horns themselves are solid and were probably fine. The crush cans go on front of the horns and attached the aluminum stock bumper.

However, it looks like the impact could have been above the bumper.. Like it hid some high bumper in front of it..

Now with a plate/winch bumper. Airbags may have went off and frame may have bent. Hard to say, but I've seen bent frame horns where the bumper itself was not really damaged.

Really wish I was able to customize this as I love the look of this but don't want the upper bar.

EDIT: just emailed them to see if I can get one without the center hoop. Will update with response.
