One piece of advise is it seems its polarity specific so be sure to plug the add a circuit in the exact orientation as the picture, also put the fuse in the same socket closest to the wire. I did it the wrong way and it kept my radio on instead of the 12v sockets. Hope this helps anyone that runs into this issue
i tried to do this over the weekend however my radio and 12 volt socket is on. I thought I had the polarity incorrect so I flipped it in all sort of combination but only was able to get the radio and 12 volt on or else it was off. I just want the 12 volt socket under the radio on. Am I doing it wrong

Almost sounds like you are back feeding the circuit and causing the radio to power up… What are you trying to wire and to where?

Also your comments about polarity and “flipped it in all sort of combination” are pretty concerning… check polarity, use a meter, make sure it’s right… Don’t do what you did because its recipe for problems, generally speaking.

i got 2 "add a circuit" and splice it together. I took out the 15 amp in the top right spot, put it in one of the add a circuit. plug it back in. The 2nd end of the add a circuit I place it in the empty slot (4th down on the left). When I put it in initially nothing turn on so I reversed it and it came on but both radio and 12 volt socket.

I'll re-check my work later and use a meter to check. thanks.

if an add a fuse is in backwards the tap isn't fuse protected, are you sure your fuse wasn't blown and that's why you only got power one way but not the other?

I just plugged it in exactly like the picture. I want to warn that it killed my battery. I have an 8inch tablet plugged in powered with a camera app on always and it killed my battery.

Thanks for this. I had the radio-turning-on issue and following this helped me.

Thanks!

Did this today. Worked great. Followed all the instructions and warnings. Super easy. 12v outlets are hot. Radio stayed off. MUCH cleaner than running new wires (needed the rear outlets to be hot). And the little fuse box under the dash (above the parking brake pedal) is out of the way so leaving the cover off is no issue at all.

Very very helpful. Thanks all.

Besides doing a separate hard wire is there any other way of doing this?

I decided to run a separate switched power to a duel cigarette socket. I missed doing old school wiring

I asked the same question some months ago, but have yet to get a reply.

I used to have a 2002 Tacoma TRD and there was a trick I found online that involved simply a short jumper wire between two fuses in the box under the hood to make the outlets live. In the 17 years I owned the truck never had an issue. I wondered if something like that could be done on the 4Runner.

Safest way is direct to battery with the proper fuse

I tried the same mod on my 2019 tundra.. the radio would not turn off.. i ended up jumping the relay in the fusebox under the hood..

I assume the 2018 4Runner is considerably more complicated than my old Tacoma, so figured live ports must be reversed engineered from what Toyota did to put them on the accessory loop. It was such a simple job on my Tacoma. For 17 years I always had live ports, constantly running a CB radio and a 200 channel scanner. Sometimes the truck would sit for two or more days with them running and I never experienced a dead battery until they were ready to die (I had recently installed the third battery in the truck when I gave it to a family member when I bought my 4Runner last year).

I'm trying to do this on my 2012, but I think my fuse box layout is different than the 14+. Does anyone know what fuses I should jump between? Thanks!

This is my concern as well. I do always keep a charged jump pack in my vehicles though. I'd hate to be stranded with a dead battery.

I did this on a 2017 and the radio is also turning on. It was great for the drive in but in general I need to figure out how to just get the rear accessory 12v to be constant. Anyone figure out why this is happening?
