DRL / HighBeam Lights

Just a heads up if anybody run into this problem.

Yesterday I was testing my lights and I noticed the high beam were not turning on when activated. Then all of sudden the DRL lights both went out at the same time.

OK, check the fuses... wait there is no fuse for DRL lights. So i check all the fuses associated with the headlights ( Hi / Lo ). They checked out.

Finally I took a shot in the dark and replaced both DRL lights with 9005 bulbs from a parts store. Lights work now.

Anybody who runs into this issue I would highly recommend checking the DRL bulbs first. After I installed the replacements, I noticed the filament inside the bulbs were broken on both bulbs.

Both DRL lights went out at the same time, while you were watching/testing.

You should have bought a lottery ticket.

It's those bulbs. I kid you not this exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I didn't see when they went out so i started thinking it was fuses as well. I chased my tail for a few days thinking there's no way they'd both go out at the same time, only a week or so after putting them in. Blew my mind. I'll never buy those over priced Phillips bulbs again.

The DRL bulb is the High Beam bulb. Go LED and disable the DRLs with the bent pin method & never look back. Better visibility and longevity.

In fuse box in engine bay, there is a grey connector. Pull it off, and bend pin #2, this is the second small pin from the right with connector facing you and large pin on far left. Plug connector back in and no more DRL. Search this as there is a full write up with pics.

I was so excited this mod was so easy as I hated the DRLs..lol

Just curious why disable your drl? It’s been pretty well established that having drl reduce accidents. I updated mine to xenon led. They have been pretty good so far.

Because the DLR mode voltage is less than the HB voltage. This is fine for halogen, but LEDs are voltage specific and it will reduce their lifespan. hence the flicker that you probably have with when using you DRLs... this will burn them out.

If you want to run DRLs with LED HBs, you want to run separate DLRs like a led strip or extra markers.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I thought that is why you install the canbus module to help prolong the life and kill the flickering. Either way thanks for the knowledge drop.

Yes and no. The canbus simply puts your DLRs in HB mode all the time. Do you really want to Blind oncoming traffic at Dawn / dusk or on cloudy days?

Try These

I just put these in two months ago. I've been hesitating thinking they will blind people..etc. Here's my two cents. The dual voltage that is produced in the high beam creates two light intensities. High and low(DRL mode). In DRL mode, they're pretty bright but no one has complained. Because of the low voltage, they flicker but only noticable in your peripheral vision, not central or directly in front of you. Totally fine and hardly noticable. If you flick the high beams on, they will produce all the light they are capable of and become very bright. If you only flash them, it is almost equivalent to the intensity of a flash bulb for photography. So far no problems and certainly much better than the stock halogen bulb. The pictured bulb is not the one that fits the 4Runner
