getting rid of FJ and moving to a 16 T4R

Hey guys!

I first fell in love with my 04 T4R! But sold it and bought an 06 Taco. Then sold that and got an 08 FJ (current vehicle), but the gas mileage is horrible. I get around 200 miles to the tank! Other than that, the FJ is pretty sweet! A few mods to it and it would be BAD A$$! BUTTTTTTTT the range of the bugger really kills all joy I have for it.

So I have my eye on a 2016 4Runner! Curious how others are enjoying/not enjoying theres.

What should I look out for and what am I in for?

Gas mileage, camping and general off roading is what I would like to focus on. I will do performance mods, standard bolt on, TRD Spec U Headers, Y pipe exhaust, maybe borla, Maf Cal, AFE Intake, all synthetics all around and most likely king shocks minor lift, extended travel.

If I can still have a range over 300 and capable off road, I would love to pull the trigger.

I have both.. Range is better in the 4r since gas tank is 5gal (correction 4) more, but don't expect better mpg. The 08 FJ has much better drivability out of the box from the drive-train perspective... They really Fed-up up the calibration on the 2010+. The motor has quite a bit more HP, but its awkward due to some strange eco throttle mapping. Expect a small gain in MPG. Overall utility and room is much improved though. About the same offroad...

I used to get 400mi range out of mine. Not sure now though. 300 easy...

Is your FJ 4x4? I'm curious if that is difference, because I barely get 220 Miles to the tank on my 08 FJ 4x4.

If I could increase my range back to the standard 300-400 miles I would be happy with the FJ.

I'm not heavy footed either, around town its 35mph. residential, 25. rarely get to 45 Occasional FWY, but that is so far and few in between.

My FJ is a trail teams , so yea it is 4x4. I don't know what the range is though as I don't daily it.. just drive it from time to time and fix it when it breaks. My daughter drives daily and she never keeps track of the mpg.

The tank is only 19 gal so you have to get ~16mpg to get 300mi range out of it. The 4r is 24 (correction 23) gal, so you only need to get 13 tmpg o get 300mi. I think a stock 4R gets 1-2mpg better than an FJ, but as soon as you slap on the tires, bumper, lift you are down in 14 range.

My 4r would get 400 mi per tank when it was pretty stock with just lift.. but now its more like 320-350 maybe 400 with a tailwind

A rear bumper w/swing-out and jerry cans might be an option? Or a more expensive auxiliary fuel tank that they make for the FJ.

The T4R has more cargo room. It's a nice ride. The 4Runner has the same frame and suspension as the FJ. The engine and trans has been upgraded since 2010, as wfo9 said. The gas tank holds 22 gallons, not 24, IIRC. I've never been able to put more than 20 gallons in it, even when I ran out the other day (luckily I was at home and getting a can of gas was easy). But I've been getting 350 miles out of a tank in my 2015 Trail Edition. As soon as you add those mods you'll loose a little range and gas mileage.

Consider getting a couple of 3 gallon low profile tanks for the roof rack of your FJ to get more range. I'd say get a 5 gallon tank but lifting 5 gallons onto the roof would not be my first choice.

If you get a 2016 4Runner and you plan those mods for off roading, then be sure to get the Trail Edition with locking rear differential. A lift is easier without the KDSS but in the TE you don't always have a choice here in So Cal.

If your primary reason for the switch is gas mileage or range, look elsewhere.

Sounds like you do mostly city driving, expect mid teens, probably about the same you are already getting. As mentioned, these have the same frame and a very similar motor to what you already have, can't expect a drastic difference.
