Angry Freakin' Dealer! Huntington Beach Toyota

I finally got my 2018 TRD Off Road Premium and the Stealership tried really hard to get me to purchase a Rockliege Security System. I said "Heck No!"

Turns out the Freakin' Dealer had already installed it! Look for a little push button assembly screwed into the dash with stupid self-tapping screws. Behind the left kick panel is a gawd-awful bas-tard bundle of wires with zip ties and electrical tape and little spade lug wire taps jammed into the factory harness. There will also be a little black plastic module with a 24 pin connector plugged in. I'm de-installing it all and slapping it on the desk of the new owner of the stealership the first chance I get.

The pictures below show the alarm's push button switch with the "de-activation" plug pushed into the front. The plug is that dimpled surface on the front. Pushbutton is green colored and on the bottom.

"IG" ??

Anyhow, I de-installed the whole fugly mess including a ground screw, six crimp-on wire taps taps and a fugly wire harness layered in nasty sticky black electrical tape. For tonight I had to leave the power interrupt relay in place because the morons butchered a main ignition power wire and I need to cut their splices out, recrimp the ends together and cover it in heatshrink tubing.

It is raining outside so I cannot finish tonight. At least the truck starts and runs without any risk of the alarm ever mistakenly activating the relay and killing the engine dead.

Well seriously I can see the concern. As long as you got the True-Coat you should be OK.

That would really piss me off. Brand new car and all that hacking work to the wires. I dont know if you ordered it and waited for delivery, but if so I would use that line as a reason they owe you some kind of good gesture. I would take a box of six oils and filter so you can do your first oil change for free (I am guessing you are the type who does not let them touch your car just for questionable workmanship oil changes).

Yep the real concern is what damage these geniuses may have done to the factory harness. Todays wiring is not something to screw around with. Not trying to rub it in but I did climb under my dash before buying to take a look for junk like that.

Yikes, You should ask them if they are paying for any electrical issues in the future now that they likely voided the Toyota warranty. - Really not a concern but I love how dealers will hem and haw about how you void your warranty by installing larger tires, lift, etc. etc. and then have no problems hacking into the factory wiring to sell and up charged alarm.....

Small potato's in the grand scheme but annoying

Wonder how far you could take this - They have technically done non OEM Toyota install that would make your life difficult on the hugely unlikely chance you have issues in the future with the electrical system and they find the spliced wires

Sounds like you got a used vehicle to me, hopefully you didn't pay the price of a new one. If you were under the impression you were getting a new vehicle, I'd take it back and politely ask for a new one.

If you wind up doing this on your own as you suggested, solder the ignition power wire, not crimp. Worth the extra time and effort for peace of mind!

Hi guys, new here and just bought a 18 SR5 and opted for the Karr security system shown in the first post to be activated (I guess they said they installed them on all the cars on the lot). Got the the system since it is mainly parked outside and wanted it to be protected against theft as I have had a car broken into in the past. After reading this thread I am worried maybe I shouldn't have had them activate it as I also bought the extended warranty. Will this alarm cause issues with the 4runner, does it do more harm than good? I don't think I am mechanically skilled enough to remove the alarm myself, so should I be worried that I have this Karr alarm on my new 4runner.

Don’t want to scare you, but our previous dealership owner always had these installed on our cars and we hated them as techs. We would get at least 3 cars a weeks towed in for no start conditions all related to these cheap KARR systems. Add to the fact that they butchered the harness

When I bought my 4Runner I made sure they didn’t install one. Bought it the same day it came off the truck.

When I bought my t4r, the Karr system was already installed. They asked if I wanted the alarm system and told them no. They shrugged their shoulder and ok. This was at Lemon Grove Toyota. When I got home, I took it off myself.
