TPMS and 2nd Set of wheels and Tires

Hi Guys,

For those of you who run a 2nd set of wheels and tires, what did you do regarding TPMS? Did you ignore the TPMS lights which stay on or install a new set of tire pressure sensors? Is it bad if the lights stay on for months on the 2nd set of wheels? After doing some research, I found out the ECU needs to be programed every time when the wheels are switch, and I can do that with the ATEQ TPMS reset tool. I hate to spend another few hundred for new set of sensors and the TPMS reset tool. Please advise. Thanks!

put on new wheels.tires today, just to change things up, went with a new set of tpms sensors. Bought a 700 dollar tpms programmer months back for other purposes. If i didn't have that, i would have bought a ATEQ. Pretty diligent with checking my tire pressure, but TPMS has saved my butt a few times

I have a second set of wheels for my 2016 4Runner. I already had an ATEQ TPMS tool for other Toyota and Honda cars so I bought OEM Toyota TPMS sensors for the second set. I would really stay away from non OEM TPMS sensors to avoid headaches and a lot of unnecessary trips to the dealer or tire store.

It's definitely not bad or hurting anything to have the tire light on for months at a time. Mine was on for the better part of 6 years because I didn't install tpms in my second set. No issues to report. However I was pretty OCD with checking my pressures just to be sure I wasn't losing air without knowing.

Not to hijack the thread but can someone post a link to the TPMS programmer you guys are using? I'd like one that not only programs the 4runner with new ID's, but can also read the ID #'s from outside the tire

Thanks for the infor bud and here is the link for the kit:

https://www.amazon.com/ATEQ-QuickSet...pms+reset+tool

It will read the IDs on your current set of tire pressure sensors and save those codes, but it will also allow you to enter the new IDs for your 2nd set.

I only use oem sensors just to be safe and avoid headaches down the road. Do you know the oem part number for those sensors? Thanks

42607-33021 (Valve Sub-M7H)
04423-33060 (Fitting KI2E)

These are what the Toyota dealer gave me.

I bought my used set from eBay but would not do that again. The set were OEM but according to Discount Tire the battery was near the end of its life. In addition, the seller did not have the right valve kit on them so I used my new set of rebuild kit. My ATEQ Quickset cannot tell whether the battery is good or not.

I run winter tires on both my and my wife's cars so here is what I think:

- TPMS sensors are not that expensive. you can get a set of OEM sensors on Amazon for something like $120.
- If you are getting your wheels swapped at a tire shop they will usually do the TPMS programming for you. If you are doing it yourself you will need a tool (see next 2 items)
- I have the ATEQ QuickSet tool (about $120) and it's probably the easiest way to program the vehicle, although it does require a funky Windows app and is a bit fiddly.
- You can also program the TPMS with a Techstream knockoff cables from China (about $20 from eBay etc), although it's a little more cumbersome.
- I know some people scoff at the whole idea of TPMS but personally I think it's a nice sanity check. I do check my tire pressures regularly by hand but it's nice to know there is an "idiot light" that will alert me if there is a serious problem.

Another option, if you're willing to deal with aftermarket stuff, is get aftermarket programmable TPMS sensors, and clone the signal of your original sensors. That way, you don't have to reprogram every time you switch wheels. That's what I did on one of my old cars when I switched between summer and winter wheels/tires.

Do you need this programmer every time you change tires over? I have 2 sets of rims/tires for my wife's 2006 and never used a tool.

We had a shop install the eBay sensors about 5 years ago and still seem to be working fine.

When I had my FJ and swapped tires I didn't put the TPMS sensors back in the tires. This caused the light to stay on. After looking at the schematic I found the wire that controlled the light. I ended up tapping the wire with a 12V source and it turned the light off. I may end up doing the same thing in my T4R.
