I have the Pioneer 49 by 76 version and getting a ton of wind noise at about 50 mph. Has anyone used the flaring with the sunroof? It looks like it may be an issue as the 76 inch lands right in the middle of the sunroof.

I was told a way to reduce the noise is to apply Gorilla Tape across the underside of the crossbars. I don’t know if this works or not but it is on my list of things to do.

RLT v Backbone
Thanks for all the helpful info. Apologies if I missed it somewhere in here, but I can't figure out if there's any functional difference between the RLT mounts and the Backbone. Is there a max load difference? It it purely aesthetic? Does anyone have insight?
Thanks.

for those running the rhino rack backbone rails. how do the rails do "naked" any issues taking the platform off when not in use and just leaving the rails up there with no cross rails or anything else?
also how is the overall wind noise with the pioneer platform 76"

I have the 83” version sitting in my basement, really glad I read your post. I just had a very simular issue with aero Yakima bars. They have a t-slot channel on the bottom as well. I used with without installing their rubber filler and they were really loud. Installed their rubber filler, no issues now. So this tip of using tape makes total sense. Thanks

Thanks for this. It is exactly what I’ve been looking for. My Rhino Rack 3/4 Backbone and Pioneer Rack arrived yesterday. Can’t wait to install. These posts have been very helpful in helping visualize the process.

Finally got it installed. Pic is too big to upload. I will have to do it from my pc tomorrow. Installed per directions and the rear door does not open. Turned the platform around and the rear door opens perfectly. 4 points of contact. I will have to drill the platform to take advantage of the middle mount.

Here are the pics. You can't tell the clearance when the rear door is open, but it's about a half inch.

Rail
Has anyone used the rail system for the Rhino Rack? If so, are they worth it?

Rhino-Rack Install Write Up
OP did you follow the drilling guidelines that were in the backbone instructions?
I'm a little perplexed because I drilled the holes and when I put the rack up top,I found that the portion that was drilled doesn't even come close to the mounting tabs on the backbone.

I have rails running the length of both sides. They work great giving me a point to tie down kayaks, paddleboards and the cargo bag for it. Highly recommend .

Yeah there is no way it will work, I have the 83” and it just barely cleared the sunroof. It is recessed and hits the underside of the rack preventing it from being moved forward to allow the air to go up and over the rack. The fairing made the noise worse for me. Working on using the parts to design a fairing on top vs. on bottom to see if that helps, plus wind deflection over my RTT. I prototyped a fairing going from the roof up and over the rack by 7 inches using the Rhino parts. The size of the fairing was ridicules
Really a poor design by Rhino for this application

The easiest way to do it is dry fit the rack on the backbone system exactly where you want it to sit. Mark on the rack where you need to drill the holes.
"The rack has 3 cross bars that must be bolted to the underside of the rack. Placement of these crossbars is determined where you want the rack to sit on the Backbone system. This is where you will have to drill the rack in order to align the crossbars in the correct location. If you mount the rack too far forward on the Backbone rails you will hit the XM “shark fin” antenna, if you mount the rack too far toward the rear of the vehicle you may have an issue opening the hatch if you have a ladder installed."
