5th Gen GPS Blues

I have a 22 SR5 premium with factory GPS is it me or Does Toyota lack a lot of features?
99% of the time I use Android Auto. My coworker also has a 22 pro and he said it's a known fact that Toyota GPS is horrible. How can a Top tier Automaker have a 1 star rating App and a 2 star rating GPS? My MIL 2010 Camry had a junk Rosing system that didn't last two years.
Has anyone looked in a 2022 Lexus ? Their GPS is 10 x better

I don't think toyota has ever been known for their tech. I do agree the lexus tech is much better + their seats are more comfortable. I think one of the biggest annoyances is that in my 4runner some of the customizable features need to be set at a dealer. where my wife's 2010 RX you can basically do it from the nav screen + it has a TPMS reset button for tire swaps. the 4runners do not. cmon toyota wtf

The factory nav is mediocre like most, and a horrible value-for-money. I am annoyed that I had to implicitly pay for it to get a TRD Offroad Premium with the premium seats I wanted. CarPlay only, thanks.

And it's annoying how poorly CarPlay is integrated into the system. Wired only, and when I unplug the phone, the system doesn't automatically revert back to bluetooth audio--what the hell? My 2019 Miata has an infotainment screen from 2012 and it accomplishes this basic functionality.

I like that the factory 2020+ navigation throws upcoming turns and stuff into the screen between the gauges--I wish CarPlay would do that.

Hopefully the 6th gen 4Runner doesn't force you to buy useless factory nav to get a rear locker and some heated seats.

Not only is the nav mediocre, it's stupid - I can't even count how many times I was on a highway/thruway, going to a location directly off an exit, and it would instead try to route me off the highway onto a sidestreet (at 30mph) for the rest of the drive there, over an hour away. It's crap.

Apple Carplay on the unit is horrible, too. %90 of the functions are either turned off or nerfed - try trying to find an album on your phone if you have a bunch on there, or play a specific playlist that the head unit hasn't decided to hide - you get a static list of like 15 of each and that's it (maybe even less than that). If you manually fiddle with the phone you can get whatever you want to play - which entirely obviates the point of Apple Carplay in the first place. When you stop the car, full Carplay functionality is restored...but when you're moving, all the functionality gets shut down.

I actually have a separate window/dash-mounted Garmin GPS unit in the car that I use instead for nav, and for now I mainly listen to Sirius/XM because I paid for it, and it's less aggravating to use than Toyota's implementation of Carplay.

I'm seriously debating getting a Pioneer AVIC headunit and finally getting a decent in-car GPS unit as well as something that'll correctly interface with the phone and let me play _all_ of my music whenever the hell I want, vs only letting me find things when I'm stopped (or manually using the phone when I'm driving, which I really don't want to do)

I occasionally look at the nav screen. For the most part I consider it a novelty and a distraction.
That goes for most of the bells and whistles.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that keeps a Garmin in the 4runner LOL
