What cross bars? Im looking for a set to put across my 2019 off roads stock roof rails.

Noob question: some kayaks look way shorter than others, what are they called? They look more portable to move around with.

Not sure what you call a short canoe... The Saranac 146 is 14’-6” long, which fits pretty well on my T4R, which only has 3/4 length runners. I was concerned about boat length, and would have liked a 17’ canoe, but settled for this. In retrospect, a 17footer would have been fine.

What are the straps that you use to tie down on the front? Do they attach under the hood at the seam?

Straps mounted under the hood. There are some different options. I just buy some seatbelt webbing and make my own that are similar to the ones in the link below.

Under Hood Loop Straps | Discount Ramps

They also have "temporary" options:
YakGear EZ Loops | YakGear

Lots of options on Amazon if you search "hood strap".

Bump for this thread.

How do you tie down canoes in the front without scratching the front of the truck? It seems that the strap would cause damage quickly moving just a bit even when tight.

I'm looking to get a canoe and will likely mount on top (vs. trailer) but want to make sure I have a good tie-down solution.

With combo of hood loops and bug deflector, straps don’t touch paint.

Canoe...

Two cam straps will do it, if they are in the right place. The only time one needs bow and stern lines is if the ropes securing the canoe to the rack can't be placed right up against the gunnels. I took this picture yesterday and had replaced the rear strap with a line due to having left the strap at a friend's house the day before.

Whether using a cam strap or a trucker's hitch (the only right way to tie a canoe to a rack) the trick is to use your weight to pull down as you tighten. In its 22 years, my 17' Old Town Penobscot has probably traveled tens of thousands of miles, including a few cross-country trips on top of the different vehicles secured by only two straps.

You kayak guys are on your own. I don't have a clue about what to do about THAT! ;)

Happy paddling!

I advise front and rear tie downs with kayaks. Learned the hard way when I went to slow down in a hairpin turn and the Dagger RPM that was on the roof rack shot out, crashed on the hood, and nearly hit an oncoming vehicle. Both of the cockpit lashings had been double checked prior to departure and the same lashing method had been used with countless whitewater boats for several years prior. The damage to my vehicle, damage to the boat, and the thought of hitting an oncoming car with a flying kayak made me change my ways.

I noticed that there are no newer TRD PROs with the newer FJ style roof rack. I’ve been wondering I’d it is possible to put a canoe or kayak on that style of roof rack? Any thoughts?
