so oem sound is a plus.. since a couple of cats are removed, is there more or less stinkiness involved?
AFE has a y pipe that eliminates both cats as well right?

Also very curious about mileage improvements here.
I'm looking at this to be one of a few things that could have no noise increase, but does help with mileage and pep.
Ideally the right intake, plus this Y-pipe, while leaving the stock catback would preserve quiet cruising, but open up a few ponies and MPGs.

Yes, more stink. The exhaust smell was always there but it is more noticeable. About 15% more stink. I'll reset the mileage and report back. Ive been at 17.0 all winter. I'll provide an update if I see improvement. It has been reported that MPGs should improve.
Ive seen the AFE Y pipe too. I think it was two pieces like the OEM pipe.

Me too, smell really is not bad. I don't want to make it sound stinky. Its fine. In all honesty I probably noticed more smell because I was hard on the gas after install. I also had the rear window down. Don't be afraid of the smell. Performance gain is no joke. Truck wants to go. I'll revise and say only 5% more stink with y pipe.

I think people also need to frame this conversation around their sensitivity to exhaust gases. I grew up driving modified domestic V8's that never had cats.....like, ever. The smell doesn't bother me at all, so I'd tend to say that the additional smell is "minimal." Those that grew up around vehicles with little-to-no exhaust smell would probably argue the opposite, so it's just something to keep in mind.

Nagging about MPGs...
Nudging this thread to see if anyone has any mileage data to report. Seems crazy that I'm chasing MPGs in a 4500lb brick, but every little bit helps!
Second, any thoughts on the ideal intake to pair with this? URD shows two AFE options, Momentum and ... regular? I had a Momentum on this truck before and it was OK.

The good old days, only worried about it if you started getting sleepy. Lol. I'm with you. Heat up the cats enough amd the smell dies down. Even better, run a 103 octane fuel for better air freshening.

Someone tell me about rear window being down ? I've never liked that , more noise than I care for ! Just roll my side ones down ,sorry I don't get it seems like more stuff gets pulled in than just exhaust ?

I see basically no mileage difference with my y-pipe vs. stock. I was royally frustrated last week driving 750 miles from Oklahoma to Colorado and got 13.6 MPG going west in I-40. Sucks. I had the normal headwinds for this area. I made the same trip in January pulling a 14-foot empty car hauler and had roughly same mileage.

im still waiting for MPG gains. I went from 17.0mpg to 17.4. Its all been in-town driving and some idling in the garage and at drive thrus and perhaps more petal than usual. Hoping a highway drive will be better..
The best CAI is the one already on the 4runner. IMHO. Maybe look for a resonator delete kit, if one exists. K&N make a nice intake tube for the 5th gen. I like the intake tube but just cant put any K&N products on my 4runner.
