Why not just bump up to group 24 or 27 battery? Reserve capacity in a 24 is around 160, group 27 reserve is around 190.

I judt recieved the HBK diode today and installed it. The charge voltage at 1500rpm was at 13.63volts before install....and 14.4 volts after install.

I wish I had seen this thread earlier.
I replaced my stock 6 year old (functioning) Panasonic with a 34R-1500 in my 2012 4Runner and all was good... for two weeks. Now I have a check battery light showing.
If the stock charging system really can't appropriately charge this battery without intervention, then is it really a good replacement??

you would usually have an energy need that would make it a requirement. If your truck is mostly stock, there really is no need.

I had this issue and found the culprit here in this thread:
Finding/Removing GPS Tracker I found myself connecting the Odyssey charger to the battery once every 1-2 months and it was frustrating. Once I found and removed the faulty GPS tracker that the dealer installed on my car, the problem went away. I haven't topped off the Odyssey in 2-3 months now and the voltage reads ~ 12.85V when I test it with a meter.
If there's something in your car that slowly sips power from the battery, it may be a good time to disconnect it. The stock 4Runner alternator can't charge the battery at a voltage level high enough to bring it back to full capacity. It can only maintain the battery.
Also, your battery could be defective. It should be able to take a charge from a decent charger (mine is 20A) and hold that for a good while. Normal driving around town without long periods of power draw with the battery off shouldn't lower the voltage.

I've had zero issues charging my 34 Odyssey, are you sure your terminals are clean and tight?

Terminals were immaculate and I ensured they were re-installed tight. I'm not aware of any tracking devices in my car, but will check thoroughly. Thanks!!

Dead Alternator
So I thought I would update everyone regarding the battery warning light two weeks after install of 34R-1500 Odyssey. Short version: the alternator went out to lunch two weeks after this battery installation. Toyota is replacing the alternator under extended warranty.
Glad to see it had nothing to do with my choice of battery! I am also working the HBK diode angle to get best battery charge possible for the Odyssey.
Thanks to all!

@ vorwac00
I saw this in another thread and thought it might be useful here too. I don't have the Odyssey yet, but my OEM battery is getting a little slow in the cold weather so plan on it soon. I have a few of these things on the way from O'Reilly's. I grabbed 5 of them +tax +shipping, and didn't even get to half the cost of the HBK.

About 1.5 years ago I did a lot of research into these vehicles charging systems and the similarities they share with other brands, suppliers etc and found that some GM's also utilize these alternators and have a higher charging voltage.
What I found was that those GM's, from the factory, include a diode fuse instead of the standard fuse we have on our alternator sense wire. It causes the alternator to see a voltage drop on the alternator sense wire, and so the alternator boosts the voltage to compensate.
I was the guinea pig on this one, and while it's obviously a small sample size, I have had 0 issues over 1.5 years and tens of thousands of miles in all types of weather, temperatures and distances. I have an Odyssey 34R-PC1500 and a 1000 watt aftermarket sound system with 0 issues.
The best part of this is, you can get one of these OEM diode fuses out of pretty much any 90's-2000 GM, Chevy, Pontiac for less than $1 out of your local junkyard. I bought 3-4 of them for about 2 bucks lol.
My voltage on a cold start is ~14.7 and ~14.2 when warm. In the summer I've seen it drop to around ~13.8 or so. Please note that these will not make your alternator to generate more amperage, just voltage. So if you are already pulling too much current from your alternator, boosting the voltage won't help you. This is for those of us that have AGM batteries and want to give them the recommended voltage.
More Information on the actual part.

So, my battery is less than a year old. I installed it last March, haven't had the upped voltage to properly charge the battery but will be installing it. Recently though the battery is not holding a charge and I need to boost my 4runner now regularly. I haven't installed anymore electrical accessories so I don't have a parasitic draw.
I'm hoping that I can bring the battery back to life and I will be increasing the voltage the alternator puts out as soon as I get back to the truck. Anyone have similar experience and were able to bring the battery back or should I get another one?

First i would try to get a good deep charge on that battery via a wall charger (AC to DC). Don't use the alternator to bring this one back to life, even after you add the diode booster unit to it. If it never comes back to life enough for you to feel comfortable, i would then put in a new battery, and then make sure you have the diode booster unit from the start of having the new one installed. I would also install some sort of bluetooth battery monitor so you can track the voltage trends, etc. on the battery over time.

Is there a bluetooth monitor you use or recommend?
Nice rig. Did you chop body mounts to fit the ray10s and 285s?

I actually use the same bluetooth monitor that e60 mentioned earlier. (Automotive BM2 Wireless Car Battery Tester 12V Battery Load Tester Bluetooth 4.0 Battery Voltage, Charging and Cranking System Monitor Digital Battery Analyzer for Android & IOS)
It's a super simple thing, but i like to be able to see the trends of my battery over time and i can most of the time tell what i had on or was messing with at the time by just looking at the app in most cases by the voltage drops, etc. It's so simple i was hesitant, but i really like it, other than the program runs in your phones background and can put a slight drain on it if you want updates, percentage alarms, etc. immediately. With that said i run the 34 with the diode booster and it works awesome. I think you will like the booster, 34, and the bluetooth battery monitor. Seems to do the trick for me anyway.
About the Ray 10's and 285's i actually had to just shave part of my body mounts. It wasnt a full chop by any means. I am running JBA UCA's and read where some people had to do a full chop of theirs which i would have done, but just didnt need to since i am going no bigger than 285/70's. I love em though, so it was worth it to me to just do a small modification.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I will help where I can!

Got the battery to come back to life and did the GM diode fuse swap. Charges at 14.9 to 14.6 volts. Will see when I get back in a couple weeks if it holds charge but so far it seems to be back as good as it was. I used a trickle charger with auto features over a few days to get it up to the 12.8V charge. I don't have a load tester but had to winch myself out of some deep snow and it held up to that so should be good.
