2014 - 5th gen Rear view camera backup not working
Good Morning,
We have a 2014 4Runner SR5 with navigation and the backup camera goes in and out... some times it works great and other it won't come on at all.
When it doesn't come on, the screen is just black and then when I shift to Drive it stays black till i press Audio or Home buttons.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Not sure if it's the headunit or the camera....
The other odd thing happening is the USB port only works 50% of the time too... doesn't seem to recognize the iPhone and play music or charge the phone.
2 things that aren't huge deals, but can be very frustrating

Your symptoms sound like loose connections. I would check that all connections are secure and tight. Same with the USB port wherever it is.
If you have ever had work done inside the vehicle I would check in those areas first.

Friends: bought a boat/trailer and my intermittent back up camera is turning into a big issue. I have loss of camera, and reverse (your'e gonna hit something) sensors and beeps.
Much said about the back up switch on passenger side of transmission. Can you get to that from inside vehicle, ie removing some trim, etc. Or by laying on back under vehicle?
Quote:
There's something that you might check before you visit the dealership... On the passenger-side of the transmission there's a switch that tells the ecu and Back-up cam that you're in reverse. There's a green wire from the D/S fusebox that supplies the power to that circuit. Then there's a Red wire that comes out of the switch and goes the the HU. The next time the back-up cam/screen fails you could pull the connector off of the switch and Jumper these two wires together; which will bypass the switch all together.

UPDATE***
Had the radio software updated and seemed to fix the USB issue, but the camera has been determined to have a short in it.... it will work if we open and close the rear door.
IF the camera is working - open and close rear door - Camera doesn't come on.
IF the camera isn't working - open and close rear door - camera works!
Thinking about taking it to the dealership in town and letting them handle it, but wondering if any one else has had this issue and fixed it yourself?

I have a 2013 SR5 with no backup camera in my current setup. Do you know if it has the wiring to make installing a new OEM radio and camera possible?

Check the wiring in the rubber boots between the tailgate and body. Likely a broken wire in there making intermittent contact. May be a very easy repair rather than the dealer telling you they want to replace the harness at a very high cost.

Super simple. Open the tailgate and look between the roof and tailgate where the tailgate hinges are. There are 2 rubber boots that go from the tailgate to the roof panel of the truck. Inside those boots are all the wires for the tailgate as well as the hose that carries washer fluid into the tailgate for the rear wiper.

Backup camera wiring loose in tailgate
Just posted in another backup camera issue thread before I finally found this one. Just wanted to confirm for others I had same issue as most in this thread, black screen intermittently when in reverse. Software update TSB didn't fix it first go-around, took it back and dealer said tech found the wiring pin (I guess theres one that plugs into the main harness hopefully?) had loose wire connection at the top of the liftgate where the rubber boot is as mentioned above. That would explain it as we use the rear hatch for the dog a half dozen times a week.

Could you snap a shot of which wire and what location on the liftgate?

Dealership fixed it, not me
^Sorry dealership did it all so no pics of it or specifics of which wire specifically. In this thread below it looks like user rigtec put up the wiring diagram, I would suppose it's one of those 4 wires called out that are hooked to the backup camera.
5th Gen Back up camera problem
Also, this is another user's photo from an unrelated issue but it's the leftmost rubber boot at the top of the gate opening in the photo. There are only 2 rubber boots showing on mine, one for electrical connections (larger on left) and the other for the washer fluid hose (smaller one on right). It does see a fair amount of twisting when opening and closing the liftgate so it would seem that's a common issue with people who use their liftgates frequently and especially in colder locations.
Hope this helps!

Having the same problem. I went out and looked the rubber boot on the left has a snap covering I opened it up but alas it's just sealed rubber no way to look and see if any connections are loose.

Any progress on figuring this out?
I have a 2014 4Runner limited and I keep having the same issue with the backup camera only showing a black screen when in reverse. I know the problem is in the rear hatch wiring because the camera will work fine if the hatch is open and only occasionally works when it's closed. I've been through several of the other threads but im not seeing any solid answers on how to fix it besides take it to the dealership.
