Unhappy Map chip took a permanent vacation???

So have a 2018 4Runner Limited with the chip 86271-35015* in it and a month ago picked up off ebay chip 86271-35015A. Ran that for a month with no issues and was driving home from work today when the GPS screen went black and popped up a picture of a compass and stopped working.

Stopped two blocks from my house and shut off the truck and started it again and a message popped up on the gps that it was unable to read the map card SD data and if I continued to have this problem to contact the dealer.

Got home and swapped out the map card 35015* the original one that came with the truck, started up the truck and it looks like everything is back to normal.

So ???? Anybody else every have a chip fail??? In all the Toyota trucks I've owned, never seen this happen. Including ones I've picked up as updates off ebay?

Todd

You mean the micro SD card?

Is it a genuine Toyota update copy?

I heard Toyota dealers are selling updated nav maps for a couple of hundred bucks, if it is that pricey, I'm guessing there might be some sort of copy protection that will disable use after a month(for counterfeits).

Think I did. Looking at the map sd card the sticker on the back was crooked. Card was thinner then the one it replaced.

Lesson learned. But still wonder how it just went blank?

It could be also a file/drive error. Do you have an SD card adapter so you can insert it into PC and see if your computer can read the files?

I think you can to fix the chip/micro SD containing the map files. If you are running windows 10, Right Click that drive(map chip)=> Scroll down to Properties=> Click Tools=> Error Checking=> Click Check=> then click SCAN AND REPAIR DRIVE.

It should give you result if the drive has errors and fixed.

Micro SD cards bite the dust fairly commonly. Especially the cheap ones.

I pulled the card and tried to read it on my computer, but it would not read anything at all. Computer acted like nothing was there.

I disagree. The only thing I miss about my Garmin was having it read out the correct time and elevation.

I have also never had a Garmin last more than two or three years. They can fail just like the map card did.

Also with having the GPS in the car, it seems stupid to me to try and mount a garmin and then route the cord for it.

Well, just won Toyota SD card 86271-OE070 that is supposed to be the 2018-2019 sd card, so hope for better luck with this.

I've had the Garmin I use in the work truck for 11 years.
The one that's on the motorcycle about 5 years or so.

Not a problem with either of them.
