2015+ Accessory Meter Display Mod & Conversion Harness How To

Accessory Meter Display Mod & Conversion Harness

NOTE: Please take the time to read this entire post. It will contain information about what is involved in completing this mod. Most of your question will be answered.

Ok Everyone, here we go! This has been in the works for a while. After a series of threads expressed the desire and interest in running the accessory meter display originally found in the 2010-2013 4Runners and the 2014 Trail only, I set about to find a way to make it happen. It took months, a lot of testing, and some long nights, but here it is!

I have designed and built a custom conversion harness that when added will allow you to seamlessly run the accessory display meter in place of the simple clock in your T4R. I will be selling these harnesses to those who would like to do this mod to their T4R’s. This thread will be strictly for instructions on how to install this harness, part numbers for displays that will and will not work with this harness, and all other needed information. This thread will also be for asking questions about installing, displays, etc. A link to the harness group buy thread will be at the bottom of this initial post.

Here are some general questions and answers. Please read.

Q: Who can do this mod?

A: As of right now, this mod and harness will ONLY work in TRD PRO, TRD OFFROAD, and TRAIL Trim T4R’s. This mod is NOT possible right now for SR5 or Limited T4R’s due to various factors (I am working on a separate solution but nothing is available at this point in time). This system requires the vehicle to be equipped with Crawl Control and Multi-terrain Select. If you would like a thorough explanation as to why having these are necessary, see below. If you have retro-fitted these systems to your vehicle, then this mod will work for you.

Q: How does the "Conversion Harness" work?

A: This harness allows you to avoid a lot, and I mean A LOT of messing with your factory harness. No complitcated splicing, cutting or rewiring involved. Your factory clock connector plugs in to one side. The other side the harness plugs into the new display. Two connector pins get slipped into empty slots on another connector. One other wire gets tapped with a small silicone self-sealing industrial tap.

Q: What displays work with this mod?

A: Toyota made three displays for the 5th gen 4Runner. Two came on the 2010-13 4Runners, one in LCD and one TFT form. The 2014 4Runner Trail came only with the TFT display. This mod will only work with the TFT style accessory meter display due to the data bus required to run it. This will not work with the LCD display due to hardware and software differences. Both TFT displays will work with this harness. It is up to you regarding color choice. Listed Below with pictures are the displays and what they look like.

DISPLAYS THAT WILL WORK:

2014 BLUE TFT
Part # 83290-35090
Housing stamp “F”

2010-13 ORANGE TFT
Part # 83290-35040
Housing stamp “5”

DISPLAYS THAT WILL NOT WORK:

2010-13 ORANGE LCD
Part # 83290-35050
Housing stamp “6”

Q: How do I differentiate between LCD and TFT displays as the plastic housing looks the same?

A: The way to tell if you have an orange LCD or TFT is based upon a black number stamp (10-13 displays) or a black letter stamp (2014 only) on the white housing above the connectors on the back of the display. This is the only way to tell if it is an LCD or TFT, as they both have the LCD and TFT part numbers embossed in the white housing as seen below.

You need to be able to see the stamp to differentiate. Stamp "5" is orange TFT, stamp "6" is orange LCD (see below). Remember, "6" does not work for this application. Stamp "F" is blue TFT.

Q: Ok, I am intrigued. Where do I get the right display?

A: Good Question! The answer depends. The quickest and easiest way to get the correct display is to go to your local dealer parts counter and order one. This being said, prepare for some sticker shock. The average cost of this display from the dealer is around $375. This is the quickest and most effective way to get the display. If you go this route, remember that all dealers pay the same price to Toyota for parts. Look around online to find the cheapest price, and take that to the parts counter. Most dealers price match on parts. If they don’t, find one that will.

My personal recommendation is to try and find a working display out of a part out, wrecked, or insurance salvage T4R. Here is why. I managed to find my at a substantially lower cost this way. If you can find a display from a vehicle that is cosmetically imperfect, the replacement clear plastic cover is around $25 at Toyota (I personally went this route instead of buying new). The clear plastic lens cover part number is #83253-35041. This part number works with both TFT displays if needed. I recommend searching on eBay, LKQ, and car-part.com. You will have to do some footwork, and possibly call wrecking yards to confirm they have the part. Again I recommend this route if possible.

Q: How do I install the Display and Harness?

A: A step-by-step guide has been posted in this thread. Installation requires some dash disassembly and plugging in the harness to the factory clock connector. Two pins will need to be inserted into a connector located behind the instrument cluster, and a wire will need to be tapped. Sounds scary, but it’s quite simple and should take around 15 minutes if you know what you are doing. Again, see the step-by-step guide to fully understand installation.

Q: Where and how are the Conversion Harnesses made? What is the Price/Shipping?

A: Each harness is hand made in the US (specifically Washington State) using OEM Toyota connectors, terminals, and high quality wire. Harnesses are sheathed in OEM wiring braid to look and feel factory as well as to protect the wiring inside. I went directly to the OEM manufacturers for these components and I can 100% guarantee that these are the same connectors, terminals, and wire type that Toyota uses. I will only ever use OEM for quality, proper fit, and look. I source all of this from Japan, and Toyota's OEM manufacturers. Each harness will be tested on the bench before being shipped out.

To complete this mod without a conversion harness requires removing the entire dash and replacing the instrument panel main harness (Part #82141-3D450, $ 2,153.52) and the secondary instrument panel harness ( Part # 82142-35811, $411.62) for a total harness cost of around $2,600.00. Hence why I decided to make my own conversion harness. Harnesses will be $50 shipped in the continental U.S. and Canada.

Q: How do I order a harness?

A: The current group buy for late june/early july is officially closed.I am not accepting any more orders at this time. Therefore, the link to the Group Buy Thread has been removed from this post. The link will be reposted here after the the current orders are filled.

PLEASE DO NOT PM ME ASKING TO BE ADDED TO A GROUP BUY LIST, REPLY TO BE ADDED TO A GROUP BUY IN THIS "HOW TO" THREAD, OR ASK HOW TO PURCHASE A HARNESS. YOU NEED TO RESPOND IN THE GROUP BUY THREAD. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS MEANS YOU WILL NOT BE ADDED TO AN OPEN OR UPCOMING LIST. SORRY, NO EXCEPTIONS.

This is so that A) It keeps things clear as to who is in for a current batch, and that I remember to mark you down on this list, and B) it keeps this thread clear so that folks may ask technical or install questions regarding the mod, tips for displays, etc.

On car-part.com what is the name of the part to search for?

Edit: I searched clock, info screen, and tv screen and those seemed to refer to the correct part. Still have to sift through the results to find one with the correct part # that will work. Some also might refer to the screen between the speedo and tach.

i test drove a 2014 dealership rental on a long trip before buying my 2016 sight unseen (i wanted KDSS so mine was actually from out of state) and it has bothered me ever since then that this was removed. seeing that stupid clock staring at me every day bothers my OCD so much!

I'm in on the group buy and looking forward to sourcing this and getting this replaced, I'll happily even buy a new display at full cost if i can't find a used one

The above photo shows a SR5. Note the 4wd shifter and non-blacked out trim as the trails and TRD PRO has. I'm confused..

In the original thread that started all this @Old Red mentioned he did a couple conversions to his SR5 that made it possible for him to add this display. The amount of work he did was extensive compared to the plug and play harness for Trail, Off Road, and Pro trims.

Hopefully I can dispel any confusion based upon the photo I posted. I have a base model SR5. I have converted my SR5 to have everything the TRD/Trail has except the rear locker so far. To run this display you need to have Crawl control as the switch controls the data bus line that feeds information from the instrument cluster to the display. I had to swap instrument clusters, the overhead console, and body mpx computer in my SR5 as well as add a conversion harness to run crawl control. All this was necessary in order to run the display in a non-trail/TRD 4Runner. This is why the mod will not work for stock SR5/Limited owners as it requires far more than just the display and the harness for the display I am making. Hopefully this clears things up. Let me know if anyone has any more questions.

Guys please no lists in this thread. This is supposed to be a how to when I post the guide up and a place for FAQs. Thank you for understanding!

Switching gears, I am working on the issue but we are a good while out for an SR5/llimited solution, if it even is possible. It took 9months+ to get the other display combo working to my satisfaction.

What we really want you working on is getting the limited ac controls to work in all the othe trims. I so much prefer thermostat controls but my trail just has the reg knobs. Lame.
