Now the clear coat is failing everywhere else. Meanwhile, my VW from the same year has been out in the California sun 90% of the time and only the front grill is showing signs of oxidation.

I have a 08 black metallic dodge that spends all its time in the sun. So cal water is so hard it won’t rinse off. I use zymol products because they’re fantastic. I just used their HD cleanse and my car looks brand new. Some was oxidation, some washer fluid, and some residual soap. I use meguires gold car wash when I’m out of zymol cleanse. And meguires leaves a film. You need to wax after any oxidation remover. But I am amazed at the difference. I figure I’ll have the same issue with the blue 4Runner. Make sure when you wash that you break out the short step ladder to dry the roof off.

I would suggest using something like Collinite 845 insulator wax. So I have a 2017 magnetic gray, did they add clear to the paints on the 14's and up? Honestly the paint is really weak on this car. Our other car is German and older and the paint still looks fantastic.

on my vehicles I use car soap with a wax in it .. perhaps still not on the auto store shelf as I bought a large 64OZ bottle .. meguires gold years ago.. also use micro fiber wash mit and I also put on a water filter on the water hose ..

I do go down to SWFL in the winter and not liking the wtr quality ..
so I go to the self car wash using the spot free water ...

I bring my bucket and wash soap and mit ..

your paint looks like your creating scratches also the paint does look like an acid deterioration..

do you have black debris on the vehicle ? I have had this happen down there.. probably from a coal fired electrical plant .. that does create acid..

I use a synthetic clear wax .. very durable .. also if necessary I have a polisher with a black finish foam pad .. use the final finish polish looks like a mirror .. only once a year maybe..

I did buy the white 4runner since it is with no clear coat solid white..

those scratches look like a cold north east vehicle ... when snow and ice on roof must be removed before on the road , and that ice will create those type scratches if its frozen on the paint when removing...

you will need a paint job ... the paint will begin to crack then the rust .. must be fixed now and with that color the hood/roof will need be painted .. after its fixed trade it in ...body shops suck ...

I’m pretty sure you are wrong.

Only Super White does not have clear coat.

All of the other colors are metallics and have a clear coat.

Pretty sure my '13 Salsa Red has a clear coat too. I have taken out some light scratches, no coloring on pads. I would expect to see "some" oxidized paint on the pads if it didn't have a coat of clear. The heck I know I don't paint cars, I only wash mine... every once in a while

I run mine through the local "brush" car wash often and the MGM paint still looks like new. I go through it 3-4 times a week in the winter however to get all the salt off the undercarriage. That hasn't stopped my rock sliders from rusting however

Windshield washer fluid for winter use contains alcohols which will strip away most waxes. That exposes the clearcoat to the elements which could cause a problem. I'd recommend using the summer fluid when the anti-freeze properties aren't needed. Better safe that sorry.

Funny anecdote - my parents had a Suburban that had pain peeling issues. So GM repainted it. The problem was that they repainted it the wrong color combo. It was a two tone with light silver and dark gray. It came back IIRC with white over gray with a red pin stripe. I don't think they really cared enough to argue about it. They're not car enthusiasts. And those suburbans were basically disposable anyway.

I have a 2011 Salsa Red Trail that's exposed to sunshine in Phoenix and Flagstaff. It's under a carport at home and work. It gets detailed and waxed every other year at the dealer and frequent automatic washes. There is no sign of paint fading or clear coat failure at this time.

Couple years later, like @DougR I have a salsa red (one owner), no issues on the roof. Mostly outside truck, occasionally under the carport, maybe two light waxes (sometimes washy/wax combo) and a yearly sealant.

I suspect some of these may have been parked under caustic trees or plants, or other similar.
