Question Anyone have a Curt Cargo Basket or Tray ?

Going on a camping trip and looking for something to hold a big-azz cooler.

Anyone use either of these on their runner? the tray is a good bit lighter, but the cargo carrier looks a bit more stable with the high sides.

I'm looking at either:

CURT 18151 Basket-Style Cargo Carrier

or

CURT 18109 Tray-Style Cargo Carrier

I think I have an older variation of the tray style carrier. I don't think it had bolts like the one you linked... but I purchased it from eTrailer 6 or 7 years ago. Very very similar. Curt also makes my Audi's hitch... good quality stuff. My carrier is collecting dust with grass growing up between it in the yard, and still cleans up like new. My only recommendation would be to ensure that the cooler and/or load is centered and balanced. If the weight is off center it will wobble a tad.

My Curt basket rusted badly. The rust dropped onto my roof and caused significant rust. You can see I tried repainting the basket but it still rusted out.

Go with rhino rack stay far away from Curt unless you do not plan to ever get your basket wet.

I'm referring to the version that connects to your trailer hitch, not the roof.

I bought C18153 and 63232 (anti-rattle hitch pin) from etrailer.com along w/ some reflectors b/c I didn't like the reflective stickers. Works well, very solid.

I like the one with the higher side rails, I typically fit two coolers and my BBQ in between, with room still for chairs and what not. Get the net with it, makes it easier to keep a tarp down over your items as well to keep them clean. Has been ok for us over the last year on a few trips but I'm ramming bikes in the truck now, big tent and supplies, I need a roof basket for sure

we have a draw-tite version and we love it..definitely slap some reflective tape or stickers for other drives.. these things are hard to see at night.. ive had a few scary moments where i almost hit another vehicles cargo hitch because it was dark.. im talking about lane changes or merging on to the freeway these baskets are very hard to see without some sort of reflector.. so do yourself a favor and slap one of these on first thing...would hate to see someone roll over because a car merges too fast and hard into your basket...

the basket style will not allow you to open your hatch.. depending on my needs i would sometimes remove the bars to allow hatch access

these things will wobble a bit but thats normal

On page 3 of this thread you will see pics of my front and rear carriers.

One thing to consider is approach and departure angles as carriers mounted low can be a real problem off road. Dual receiver with a Hitch Haul Z bar can help that. Plus in the case of rear, put the carrier far enough back so the hatchback can be opened.

Front Hitch Receiver

someone (CBI?) has a front hitch reciver that is much higher than the curtis, it is hidden behind the bumper so the approach angle doesn't suffer as much

Yeah, I’ve seen that one, in a thread here, comes out about license plate level.

Here is the thread on the CBI. Bit more complicated install.

CBI Front Receiver Hitch

BTW, another advantage of my rear rack install is that I can stand between the rack and back of vehicle, with the hatchback open.

How is it going so far with Curt 18153? Is it not too wide for 4runner? I just bought one and it looks way too wide. It blocks stop lights and I am worry about being snagged by police. Have ou had any issue so far?

I had a similar problem with a Curt roof basket I had on a previous vehicle. It started to show rust in under 6 months of Monterey rainstorms. I used it for the cross country move and took it off when we got moved in. About a year later I dusted if off and decided to try and rework it, first by using a wire brush attachment on a rotary tool removing some of the worst rust spots, then priming it, and finally spraying the whole thing with bedliner. Worked well with no issues for the 5 months I used it after that, before getting rid of the Jeep and basket for a 4Runner!

Curt is ok, if you first and foremost understand that it's cheap because it won't last.
