Prinsu rack "Cargo Basket Kit"? (and others)

So, after many weeks of research (I'm in no hurry), I had pretty much decided I want a "basket" style rack vs a flat rack. Probably the "Baja Standard Basket" because it's simple, solid, and I like the styling. I know, they are heavier, taller, likely louder, and harder to load/unload, but I'm tall and I like the peace of mind that if a piece of gear gets loose it won't immediately go bouncing down the freeway.

However, I recently noticed that Prinsu has a "Cargo Basket Kit". A pair of these would be modular/removable, so I could have a flat rack most of the time, but add a basket as needed. LFD Offroad has something similar, as does Frontrunner (full basket or half basket).

Anyway, I like the idea of running a streamlined "flat rack" most of the time, for reduced air resistance and noise. I also think it will be easier to mount my rooftop bike racks. A roof top tent is NOT something I want at the moment, but who knows for the future.

Does anybody have experience with one of these? Any thoughts about the concept in general?

If I’m no t mistaken SSO also has an additional top rail or basket style (1/2 and full length) but haven’t seen anyone run it yet

did ya check the Tacoma forum? the Prinsu maker (Zach?) started a thread there and it has a TON of info, with ideas, pictures, etc. It might have that, but yeah, I also haven't seen much on that basket, it does seem like a great idea. I love my Prinsu, but i'm with you, the concern that a ratchet strap loosened up was with me the entire first trip I used the rack.

I've obviously got a little experience with mine

I originally designed it to simply add a forward light mount when our Crossbars were new. I was just trying to get the lights moved farther forward with the factory roof rail setup. Found out that they also worked pretty well as cargo stops for boxier items.

We've discussed making some additional parts to go with the brackets to make a complete basket option, but so far there hasn't been much demand.

I've got a SSO rack that I use Frontrunner chocks on, to hold my stuff in place.

LFD is on my short list. So far nobody makes something EXACTLY like what I want, but several companies build a rack that is 95% there, so it's a hard choice.

I would be interested in something designed specifically as a cargo stop. I like the idea of having two halves, front and rear. That way I could run just the rear. A gap between the two in the middle, above the middle seat doors, would be fine, and might actually make loading gear easier when standing on my sliders.

Read that alot of SSO rack owners adapt Frontrunner accessories. I will probably be going with a SSO rack in the near future

For what it is, Frontrunner is a little pricey, but their stuff is solid and very adaptable. I got their double jerry can holder as well and it fit perfectly. All I had to do was replace their bolts with some tee-bolts that would slot into the 80/20 aluminum.

Below: double jerry can holder & 2 Frontrunner cargo boxes held down with chocks & stratchits.
