To Snorkel or Not to Snorkel..? That is the question!

So I’ve looked around at installs on the forum and good feedback for the most part, but I wanted to hear first hand from those who’ve done it.. would you do it again? I do plan on exploring through deep water, and don’t want the low intake placement to hinder my crossing ability on the trail. Ready for the feedback from the experience on the forum from those who’ve been there done that!

Thanks in advanced
BK

I don't understand the question? Highlighted in red above and mitigating dust are THE reasons for a snorkel

To Snorkel

Just wanted to hear feedback from people that’ve gone to the knife and maybe not gotten what they expected performance wise,

I’m looking at the ARB Safari Snorkel

I gotcha I am just giving you a hard time, its like if any one ever asks you why you need so much horsepower - the only proper response, " I don't under stand the question"

Personally, I can't get past the ugly factor, but that's just me.
When you need it, you need it no matter how ugly it is.

^this. I mean if you need it get it. There is plenty of info in the snorkel threads about them.

My only odd observation is that I seem to get more bees in the air box. The filter catches them but it’s annoying to clean them out. My gas mileage is slightly higher after install so there is that.

If you want a snorkel then buy it. If you don't like it, then don't buy it.

Its good in keeping dust out of your airbox and for water crossings.

It doesn't add performance or mileage

You will end up with bugs in your airbox.

It will attract a lot of attention from passerby's....both positive and negative.

Installation isn't difficult.

once you cut that hole in your fender, and in your A pillar, there is no turning back.

I'm all for the snorkel

Just keep in mind that the snorkel will help with one problem caused by water crossings. Make sure that you cross the others off the list too, and remember that these "modern" vehicles and all that make them run don't like water... Not saying you can't take preventative measures to keep things safe, but the snorkel alone won't save you when the water line rises.

I'm very happy with my ARB snorkel. It's been installed for thousands of miles through Baja and US desert areas, and has really helped with keeping silt and dust out of the air cleaner. On part of the Baja 1000 course South of Bahia de Los Angeles I dropped into one of the largest silt/bulldust pits I've ever seen, with the entire right side of the truck up to the fenders in the stuff...and was very happy to have the snorkel.

The few water crossings I've done have been with greater confidence, given the fact that it's no longer drawing air from the inside of the fender. (Albeit other electrical components are still vulnerable.)

Max depth I've had to wade was about 33" of the Verde River in AZ at low speed flow. Good pucker factor, but solid ground under the water, and with the rear locked and a-trac up front, the 4Runner did just fine.

I do get questions, but like others here, I enjoy chatting with folks about adventures and mods....

Just installed mine last week. Definitely a bit of pucker factor in the install, but so far I'd do it again. Install is very straight forward, I think you'd have to try really hard to mess it up.

I think it'll be good to have. I've done a few stream crossings where the water was deeper than I thought it would be in the center, and dropping into a rock hole could have easily gotten me into trouble. This should help make that a little safer. Also looking forward to cutting the dust down when following people.

I would do it again for the dust mitigation itself, it drastically helps keep the filter cleaner on very dusty trails.

Yes I would do it again. Big difference on dust and intake temps are lower.

Trips-
1. Cut large hole fist so you can reach the inside of the fender to remove the fender liner clips.
2. Buy new fender clips, use dykes (side cutters) to cut the old clips off.

I plan on running a snorkel next year. I don't do a lot of water crossings (deep ones atleast) but we run a lot of mid speed (30-40mph) dirt roads here in New England and the speed kicks the dust clouds up pretty good during the summer since it gets so dry usually.
