As a 5th gen addict like most of us on the forum, I'm constantly changing things up (adding this and trading that). I have done the rock-crawler / over-lander build and now I want to do something different.
URD and Magnuson superchargers are in my sights but that's what everyone is saying. Is there any other way to add power. I know i'm thinking outside the box, but has anyone beefed up the engine block and turbo'd a 5th gen?
What about contacting tuning companies that worked on Toyota sports cars?
I am leaning to the more trophy truck style this go around, something that i haven't really seen on a post 2009 runner.
Any suggestions? i'm open to hear it all, and want to know what everyone thinks.

Is this like a Utopia idea as in if you could what would you do ? The old adage is you can go as fast as you can afford to go of course, I don't know you or your bank account but anybody building trophy trucks would probably say that you should set aside 100K. Maybe cut that in half and do something a little more mild LoL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whYSKzJvtfY

I'd love to see a turbo setup. IMO turbo power is > supercharger for daily driver use. Usually you can peak the torque around 12-1500rpms rather than higher in the RPM range like most SC setups.
Toyota of course is already doing that exact setup with the 3.5L twin turbo in the Lexus models. What may be interesting down the road is to see what parts are interchangeable. It may very well be possible to use the rods and pistons from the Lexus twin turbo in the 4.0L. But as of now I think it's still too new to know if there's any interchangeability between them.
Personally - in a perfect world - I really love the idea of what Cadillac is doing with the new twin turbo small v8. They're build a long stroke small displacement turbo v8 that will be a low rev engine. But it'll make gobs of power at low rpms and be a lot nicer for daily driving. As much as the truck around it is a rolling piece of shit - our 8.1L GM HD2500 is a fantastic engine. The reason is that it only makes 330hp - but it makes it way lower in the RPM range. It's 440 Ft lb at 3200rpms. Peak HP is only 4200rpms. It makes power in the RPM range you actually use it. It's a much nicer engine for daily life than the 6.2L that has a lot more peak HP, but a lot less power down low in the RPM range.
My ideal turbo would act a lot like that big displacement 8.1L on a smaller scale. But... I'm not sure the 4.0L is a good base engine for that type of power. I'd guess everything about it is wrong for that task. It's not a high torque motor and isn't built like one.
The easiest 5th gen to turbo would be a 4cyl 2010. The 2.7 is a great engine for turboing. BUT - I don't think it was ever sold in a 4x4 version with the 4cyl. So you'd be looking at a lot of work to convert to 4x4. However - all the stuff should be bolt in and off the shelf from toyota to covert to 4x4 by using stuff from the tacomas.
Or... just buy an LC200, do a tundra LT swap up front, Tundra axle in the rear, strip some weight out, and you're already there. Add a S/C for 550hp/550lbtq. You could do this all-in for around $50k with a used high mile LC200. I don't think there's any way to get a 5th gen 4Runner anywhere close for similar $.
I wanted to do the same but doing all that is just ridiculous.
It is so hard to want to cut into the cab to do a 4 link or 3 link cantilever for the rear. For the front...chop everything for an I-beam or just do a LT system? How about the roll cage? It's just a PITA for this vehicle. I'm sure it's possible but it would be much easier to just get an already built ford ranger or tacoma so you can just the shit out of it. The only 5th gen that was built that way that I have seen is the stock one that TRD built for the baja 1000. That thing was my goal but just doesn't make any sense to do that. Might as well build a tacoma.
Supposedly the new Land Cruiser is going to be a twin turbo 6cyl. Not sure how much truth there is to that claim, but that's what the rumor mill was selling last week.
And it makes me think of the 2.7 4 banger Chevy Turbo....348 Torque at 1500..........Toyota, there's something to shoot for! You make a stout 2.7 to build on..............
