there were at least a few other users the last time this was posted but i think the consensus was that it wasn't common (and i think the post that started that thread was actually just physical damage if i remember correctly)

Do you use hand lotions? Do you notice you grip the steering wheel too firmly?

You live in Arizona so I'm sure the sun is beating down on it 330+ days a year. Do you use any type of windshield cover?

Yes my 2015 has a similar problem.
The areas where I rest my hands most of the time are wearing through the black coloring and exposing the white layers underneath.

My 2016 has this as well. It is pretty minor but I can feel it with my hand in the 10:00 position.

The stitch on covers on AMAZON are pretty good. Time consuming but factory look when done.

This isn’t just a Toyota problem, it’s happened on a few of my previous cars. As the previous poster mentioned, you can buy a leather/alcantara wrap on amazon for dirt cheap.... I’m running a alcantara w red stitching...it doesn’t add bulk and it’s really easy to do. Downside is it’s time consuming. Maybe 2 hours to do

I just purchased the Loncky Leather wheel cover and I agree, the quality looks great. Some winter day will come in Feb. where I will have nothing better to do then spend 6 hours stitching it on

I just installed a Loncky / Xuji cover pre-emptively on my '18 before my hands could get a chance to shred the OEM cover. I love the results. Posted here...

I think gripping the steering wheel too hard is the reason my 2007 jetta's wheel was reduced to nothing at the top. I've been trying to umm not grip the 4Runner so tightly. But I figure I should get a cover as an extra layer of protection. Granted both wheels are/were leather.

I also installed one of these covers several years ago on my 2013 that has a plastic steering wheel and it still looks great. It took some time for me to install it, well worth it.
