Secondary battery on opposite side without fancy mount???

I've looked at the dual battery mounting kits out there that place the battery in front of the air box and while they look great, are they necessary?

On a hunch I popped my hood and was checking things out tonight. Once the secondary air pump is relocated and a few brackets moved or slightly fabbed, why can't the stock driver side location be copied? Looks like just a plastic tray and the basic J hook tie downs. The hook holes are present and appears to be room enough to mirror.

Anyone done this super simple way or know of why it won't work?

The more I look at similar setups online the more I think this is very possible. I'll have my secondary air pump relocated in a couple weeks. At that time I'll grab an old Optima or something I have laying around and see how it all fits. I still "think" this can be done with no tray or anything. I'm going to see if a basic generic plastic tray and some oem style tie downs will work.

After all, if it is good enough for Toyota to use this method on the OEM setup wouldn't it be good enough for a secondary non starting battery?

Maybe unbolt the plastic tray on the DS and see if it can be relocated to the PS. This will tell you if all you need is another OEM tray and hold down system.

Try this with a little modding. If you look at the application specific mounts, you can pretty much pop one of these in there and weld on a mounting tab to make it extra solid.

Oh, I will say that if you want it in front of the airbox I've been impressed with some of the designs I looked at. That said you can probably make up a mount for whatever.

If you don't/can't weld, you can always grind and braze it with a mapp torch.

This is the crazy part and I can't verify without going outside in the dark and cold to check but... I believe the OEM battery tray is nothing more than a cheap thin plastic tray that isn't bolted to anything.

if there are premade kits out there, that means you can probably piece it out on your own.

Im running a shock works 2nd battery kit, and i don't think there was anything in the kit that you couldn't find at the hardware store, other than the fancy battery tray. Which means you can probably buy a cheapo battery tray online (plastic or metal), drill some holes and bolt it down in the same location where the shock works kit goes.

When I received my kit, I honestly wasn't that impressed with the amount of money I paid for it. Although, I will have to admit, the directions they gave was probably worth the money....b/c they literally tell you what to do step by step.....as in...you can't screw it up simple.

in 50/50 hindsight, I think i wasted my money on it, but then again, without the directions, I wouldn't have any idea how to relocate the air pump, etc.

I put a marine deep cycle in my 5th, so I used this Attwood marine tray from Walmart and this hold down from Advanced auto parts, hooking into the stock locations. Less than 20 bucks. I had to bend the front hook a little to clear the larger battery but its been solid. It's a 2012 so no AIP repo, and I attached the power steering res to the tray. No pics of install tho.

Awesome! That is exactly what I was thinking was possible. I'm not sure how many folks realize an expensive tray isn't necessary. They are nice and probably "better" but a cheap tray and factory hold downs just like the other side would work just fine.

If you are using a battery longer than the factory battery you will want more than a plastic tray to help prevent it from rocking on the fender, this is also true on the drivers side

It seems to me most people would rather spend $100-$200 on stuff they don't need in stead of doing any research at all and install something they will actually use.

Cheap trays will work on both sides. Here's what I did with mine --> Dual Battery Install

I did make a change to the battery tie down because I didn't like the way it crowded the air box and I changed to a bigger battery --> Custom G65 tie down

I have been looking into this as well. I want it place it in the front where the JDM version is mounted.

Does anyone have a write or instructions (or the link) for the relocations of the fluid reservoir and pump relocation?

That little Attwood tray has a lip of about 3/4", and I fastened the PS res to it. It's pretty rigid as far as holding the weight of the battery from rocking. There is not much room in there so that deep cycle is not going far anyway. Now the factory tray is stout, but using it to support a big battery I don't recommend.
