I understand there is a "lever" on the console side of the plug that needs to be pressed in at the top to release the plug but I tried several times and could not get it to release. Any suggestions?

yeah, those get more difficult to press down with age (both personal and vehicle). A couple of suggestions I have used:
1. To press the tab down further, try something like long nose pliers.
2. If you are sure the tab is down as far as it should go, you may have to pry the two connector halves apart with a flat screw driver.
