Magnuson Supercharger 2K Mile Review and 6K Mile Review

Magnuson Supercharger 2K Mile Review and now 6K Review (scroll down)

I finally had the time to writeup my review on my S/C installed in my 18 LE. I had a lot of folks asking for my opinion on it, but I wanted to get some miles on the truck before giving my feedback.

Broke it up in sections to make it easier to follow.

- Cost of the unit (this was the most asked question)
- Warranty and Installation
- Gas MPG
- My comments

Costs

By far the most asked question regarding this mod was "what did it run you?". Cost is a relative question. I can't tell you if it's expensive to you or if it's a moderate cost to you. What I can tell you is exactly what I paid for the S/C and the installation.

Sparks Parts with promo code "tundradude34" will get you 5% discount. Sparks also has free shipping on the S/C. Quick thank you to Mark who runs the tundradude34 youtube channel. Good guy and if you are into the Tundra has some great material. Plus..has a deal with Sparks to give you 5% on anything they have.

S/C via Sparks shipped directly to my Toyota Dealer: $5410.25. Jamie at sparks is great to deal with if you want to speak with someone before making the purchase.

Warranty and Installation

My truck is new, and Magnuson has a limited warranty that covers the S/C and vehicle up till the 3/36 new car warranty expires. The caveat is you must have a dealership, or an ASE certified mechanic perform the installation and a copy of the installation invoice must be included with your warranty information. If your truck is out of the 3/36 they have 12 month part warranty on the S/C itself. The warranty I used is located here:

http://www.magnusonsuperchargers.com...2020170605.pdf

Make sure you record the serial number of your S/C. It's located on the shipping box and the shipping documents (attached to the box). There is also a sticker on the rear underside of the S/C itself. My dealer kept my original parts but tossed the shipping documents (containing the serial number) and tossed the larger box (also containing the serial number). My parts were nicely packed in a smaller box that did not have the serial number. When I went to fill out the warranty information, I could not find the serial number for the S/C. I eventually had to purchase a small dentist mirror to see up underneath the rear S/C housing to see the small white sticker containing my serial number. I then with my other hand took a picture of the image in the small mirror. Then I used another mirror to re-reverse the image of my serial number, so I could eventually decipher the alpha numeric code. Fun. Learn from me and record that number prior to installation. You need that serial number along with an invoice showing the installation of the unit to be covered.

Once you have that information and you scanned in your installation invoice and warranty card into pdf you can email it to [email protected] . She handles the warranty information for Magnuson and is extremely helpful. I'm hoping I never have to contact Magnuson for anything, but it's a nice piece of insurance for your new truck.

Installation

Very important...I can't stress this enough. Find a great trustworthy installer. This is now my third S/C Toyota (2001 D-cab Tacoma, 2011 D-Cab Tacoma and now my T4R). I had a terrible experience on my 2011 TRD S/C installation from a dealer claiming they had experience installing these. I won't repeat what happened to me. If interested I wrote up my experience here:

Supercharger Dealer Install Times/Costs | Tacoma World

Next before you start with anything, make sure you flush a full tank of 92+ octane gas through your tank. I had Mark (sales rep) drive my truck for a week prior to me even taking delivery to run a tank full of 93 through it prior to turning it over to the service department.

The installation cost was done under "warranty" costs and the total was $1219.00 including 6% sales tax.

Warranty costs are slightly lower per hour I'm told. I have purchased way too many vehicles from the same sales rep and I trust him with no hassle/haggle deals. We've become friends over the years and I'll give him a shout out. If you are in South Western PA he's a no BS standup guy. Mark Burns at Taylor Toyota in Hermitage PA. He put me in contact with Mike (Toyota Master Tech with 38 years experience) at his dealership. Mike also is the lead mechanic on his sprint car team. I spoke with Mike on the phone before making my final decision on where I was going to get this installed. He's done several TRD S/C installations...plus a bunch of Mustangs. This was his first T4R, but it's very similar to the Tacoma/FJ installation. I sent him a link to the Magnuson installation manual and he got back to me after reviewing it telling me he was comfortable doing the work. Total installation time figure 1.5 days. The installation is like OEM. Super clean. Ensuring the worm gears on the external reservoir were turned so you didn't see the screws was a nice touch. Everything with the installation looked like it came from the factory. If you read my 2011 installation nightmare, you can kinda figure I was looking over everything very closely. Important note for those attempting to do this on your own. You need to install the tuner and send in the file to Magnuson BEFORE tearing anything apart. They will in turn send you back the tune and you install the tune prior to turning any screws. Mike (who was on the clock) told me when he uploaded the files to Magnuson's website he received the message "We will get back to you in 2-3 business days" Obviously that wasn't a good start. Being Magnuson was on the West coast with a 3 hour time difference he called me letting me know to start emailing/calling Magnuson to see if they could expedite this. Mike was able to start wrenching because he was familiar with the installation and knew not to start the vehicle w/o having the tune applied. Shout out to Magnuson for getting Mike the tune by 9:30 AM Pacific (that's like 30 min after they open up shop). I believe his voice mails, plus me calling into Magnuson when they opened helped move things along. Just note that you need this tune and if you are doing this on a weekend, you might be stuck until they open on Monday.

Gas MPG

First.. yes. You need 92 or higher octane gas. I have 94 and 93 readily available in my area.

I'm the managing owner of my wife's 2014 LE with 17" TE wheels and Nitto G2 265/70 tires. Her MPG never sees more than 16.3 with 100% city driving. Her right foot is a little heavy. I put on a little over 1200 miles with the 20" pie cutter OEM wheels/tires and averaged 17.9-18.3 MPG. That's with a split of hwy/city driving. I've since installed FX Pro 17” with Conti Terraincontact AT 265/70/17 tires. My MPG has stayed the same with 800 miles on this wheel/tire setup. It's all in the right foot. I'm getting better MPG on my 18 LE S/C than in our 14 LE. Of course, this is easily erased by the right foot. I don't race the truck nor do I burry the pedal. It's not a race car. Which leads me to my comments on the S/C itself.

My Comments

You are on this forum likely because you enjoy the 4Runner and you likely mod your 4Runner. I'm no different. I've installed mods on vehicles that I later regretted. Spacer lifts come to mind... This mod. Zero regrets. To the point that when we decide to trade in my wife's 14 LE and if she wants to get a new T4R LE I will have this installed prior to delivery. It means that much to me on the driving experience. The closest resemblance is our 4th gen V8 limited T4R. That was a beast and this 18 LE is close if not better overall driving experience. I'm not getting into a 4th vs 5th gen discussion..just my personal opinion. My 2011 TRD S/C Tacoma was much more...raw. What I mean is that the truck was lighter than the T4R, less sound deadening making the whine much more noticeable as well. To the point sitting at idle you could hear the S/C chattering (normal operation). It felt it had more torque/punch than the T4R. That being said, the S/C on T4R feels like OEM. Very quiet. The whine if you get into it is there, but if the radio is on (even on low) it's hardly noticeable. Driving w/o getting too deep you wouldn't even know it's there.

The biggest difference between our 14 LE and the 18 S/C LE is on hills and highway entrance ramps and highway cruising. Let me explain a little more on this. I live in South West PA. We have hills. A lot of hills. I recently drove over to Gettysburg for a golf trip going on the PA turnpike up over the mountains. Cruise control on 73 the truck just pulled effortlessly on hills. Never had to down shift. If you are familiar with Gettysburg, I took route 30 up to Breezewood to hook back on to the turnpike. Those are some steep grades with speed limit posted at 55. That was when I laughed to myself passing an 18 wheeler and the truck never downshifted from 5th and pulled hard to 80 with only a slight hit on the right foot. It had a lot more, but some curves were coming up. Another area is highway entrance ramps. Where Route 51 enters Route 70 there is a short runway with a stop sign. No yield. In our 14 you have to plan your entrance onto 70 especially during high traffic periods. We all know the 4Runner isn't a drag car. Neither is the 4Runner with the S/C. It will however, provide you with the added confidence of pulling out onto Route 70 w/o staring in your review mirror watching the oncoming cars catch you. I noticed that the first time I took that specific exit with my 18. That was a very welcomed feeling. The last place where you feel the difference is just highway cruising and passing. It actually has balls now at highway speed. Which makes getting out into the passing lane within a small window much easier to do without having to downshift into 4th (I mean you can... just isn't needed).

It's not transformed into a sport SUV. Save your track money and don't take it to the strip to see your 18 second ¼ mile. It has met and exceeded my personal expectations. The truck is fun, has power when I need it, still gets the same if not better MPG and (most importantly) I simply enjoy mod'ing my vehicles and this is one cool mod. If you do decide on this mod, I will tell you will really enjoy cool mornings and evenings driving the truck. That cool air and the S/C whine will remind you why you did this mod.

Edit 2/1/2019. 6K Update

I've received feedback via PMs and on this thread if the truck is still performing, any issues, still satisfied...gas MPG changed... Wanted to give a quick update and hopefully give back some useful information to the forum.

For this update my truck now has over 6500 miles. It's now been 5 months since installation.

Broke it up into sections.

- Issues
- Performance
- Gas MPG
- My Comments

Issues

One issue to date. It's a known issue with the reservoir tank. Both the upper and lower hoses had small leaks where they connect to the reservoir tank. I had the exact same issue on my 2011 Tacoma with the TRD S/C (but the lower hose leaked at a much higher rate) it literally drained out on my garage floor the very first night after installation. My reservoir was down about ¼ of the tank capacity and was dripping from both hoses. I noticed the leak about 2 months after installation and when the weather swung from 60F to single digits. This likely had an effect on the rubber hoses connected to the hard-plastic reservoir tank. I checked my tank everyday for a week after initial installation for this specific leak (experience from my Tacoma install) and didn't see a drip. My fix for this was simply tightening the upper worm clamp a half turn. That fixed the upper hose leak. The bottom hose leak turned out to be a little more frustrating. The leak remained after a half turn (even ¾ of a turn). You need to be cautious because you can crush the plastic nipple with too much pressure from the worm clamp. I used the same fix that I did with my Tacoma. The nipple is long enough for 2 worm gear clamps. Make sure the first (nearest to the tank) is as close as you can get it. Place the second worm clamp right beside it and both clamps will be on the nipple. I then used a heat gun (it was below 20F) to heat up the rubber hoses as well as the plastic tank. Cinched up both clamps and that has fixed my leak.

A more elegant fix can be found here: Updated w/fix! Supercharger coolant leak on the reservoir | Tacoma World

That fix addresses the oversized coolant hoses in relation to the reservoir tank nipple.

I was going that route if my two worm clamp fix continued to leak.

As a byproduct of my nightmare Tacoma install, I still had the Toyota pink stuff coolant in my garage to top off the coolant tank.

That's the only issue I've had to date.

Performance

My initial review regarding performance is still the same story. Highway on ramps, highway passing, driving up hills is where I see the biggest difference. It's an easy difference for me to experience because I routinely have to get fuel in the wife's 2014 LE. The only difference in her truck are the Nitto G2s 265/70/17 (and obviously the missing S/C...and gas...).

I have done exactly 2 WOT pulls from 2nd to 3rd gear on an uphill highway entrance ramp close to my home. That was a hoot. The S/C whine was way more noticeable as was my speedometer climbing to the right and the RPMs hitting redline. What I noticed was the shift from 2nd to 3rd was as smooth as OEM. I'm thinking the tune pulls some power during the shift. Because in my S/C Tacoma doing the same pull at WOT my shift was not as smooth. I actually installed in IPT valve body mod to fix that. No stutter, no wishy/washy shift... just felt like every other shift at half throttle, which for me is great.

I've not done any other WOT pulls to redline in the truck. I don't need to. The power from 1700-3K is all I personally need and it's in that window that my wife's truck pales in comparison. A member PM'd me asking if the S/C felt like my (long gone) 2003 V8. Remembering driving that truck, that's a pretty close comparison for the torque I now have.

Gas MPG

The switch over to winter blend has affected my MPG a bit. We did a PA turnpike ride logging a bit over 600 miles up over the mountains and the trip computer had me at 20.1MPG for the trip. My normal daily driving has me at 16.5 MPG. For comparison sake, my wife's 2014 with the G2s is now at 15.1 MPG. Her tires and her right foot likely have something to do with that. My Contis are not as aggressive as the G2's nor is my right foot. I'm fully confident if she used my truck as her DD the MPGs would dip. That being said...I'm not seeing a drastic (or even minimal) change in my MPG with the S/C. Yes, the higher-octane fuel is required, but I'm thinking folks on this forum did not purchase the 4Runner for great MPG. Bottom line, the S/C has not negatively affected my MPG. Your right foot will have more of an effect on this variable.

My Comments

I love it. Zero regrets.

Hope the above info helps in your decision making. If you have any questions, feel from to PM me. If I do run into any further issues, I'll post it in this thread.

Good post, Glad you like it. It was a real PITA to deal with all the negativity here about this kit. It was like pulling teeth to get people to accept the idea that it could be a good thing for some folks.

I've been very happy with mine also. Hopefully it continues to be trouble free. The tune could definitely be better, but it is still great overall.

Hopefully, custom tunes will become a thing for this platform at some point.

Fantastic write up!!! I've been thinking about a S/C and this is very helpful to understand the process. I can see one in the future, sooner rather than later now.

Very nicely written. I was just in PA visiting relatives in Elysburg and saw first hand what the hills were like. I have not decided between the Magnuson or the URD unit but either will have to wait until I make the last payment. Best of luck!

That's bad-ass, if I owned my truck out-right....would be nice...well, assume it's CA street legal even.

Overall I'm finding my stock 2018 4R Premium a better driving experience than my 2015 was....just feels smoother/a little more well built/a little peppier and the gas mileage is a touch higher so far...even stock.

I am guessing something like this SC might need to be re-tuned was the engine wore though?

Bad or good results, keep writing about them. If there is something wrong with the design, if you write here, you may have perhaps higher chance Magnuson to do something about. This is a good post!

S/C Reservoir Location

I know I came across this somewhere in the forum but for the life of me I cannot find it anymore. Does anyone that installed the Magnuson Supercharger also have a power tray or accessory tray in the location where the intercooler reservoir is mounted? If so what was the solution for mounting this? Thanks in advance.
