Question

For the spare tire carrier, did you weld bolts to the circular plate that holes the spare tire? I got my kit and I’m working on it slowly.

hey there thanks for the play-by-play pics! do you think there's a way to cut a pair of holes to mount a pair of LED Pods down on the lower portion of the bumper. i am a non-welder w/ no experience but I have a couple local guys that can weld. do you think there is space between the crash bar and the bumper for a pair of pods flush mounted? and would a solid welder be able to cut the right holes for something like that? Tks in advance!

I have built a few of these for customers and one of them took it upon himself to have someone cut 2 holes like you are requesting. The holes were not measured right and now you can see the frame. There is not enough room to mount the pods he has. It looks like you could cut the holes but they would need to be further out. Do a lot of measuring so you only cut once. Worse case, weld metal back in and grind down then cut again.

Yes, I welded the bolts directly to the plate for the spare tire.

If I get to keep the 4Runner I am going the dot_Tom route. I really like the look of the coastal offroad bumpers. I wish I knew someone who could weld and lived in my area.

With this kit, do you also have to weld to the body or you weld the bracket that bolts to the body?

You weld the bracket that bolts to the frame. No frame welding necessary.

Looks like you had to remove your factory hitch. Did you ever consider mods to the CO bumper so that you could leave the factory hitch attached?

Great build man!
I just finished mine and have it on my 3rd gen.
A quick question for you, are you experiencing more road noise? I feel like I hear the rear bumper when I make turns or hit bumps. I've check all the bolts and its on there tight.

Hey guys, in working on my 2011 rear Coastal full height bumper and running into a number of challenges. The instructions I received didn't tell me to cut off the tips of the body mounts, so I got things tacked together and started the welding before they got back to me to update as I just couldn't get things to line up right.
Is the horizontal top piece actually close to level with the vehicle for you guys? I can not see any way that would possibly work without large gaps to weld as it sits on the spare tire hoops.
Also, did you do anything to cover the gap between the bumper and the vehicle under the tailgate?

Rear Coastal Offroad bumper - hitch mod

Hi
My 2005 GX470 is almost identical to the 4Runner, but the rear crossmember is really in the way - I took the unusual step of cutting off the top of the crossmember and welding in the factory hitch, so that it wouldn't hang down below the bumper. Ugly welding (my first project) but it works.

Looks great! By far one of my favorite looking rear bumpers.

I am also curious about the hitch, I have a Mission Overland trailer being built (approx 2400#). Definitely need to be able to keep the factory tow capacity. Anyone else play with that?

Hows the weight? I have talked to a few people that put on steel rears and it gave them the death wobble at 70mph. This is still my daily.

They say it isn't tow rated, but I assume that's for legalities and avoiding lawsuits if you can't weld and it comes apart on the freeway. They sell a removable weld together reciever for like $50, I chose to go ahead and weld mine to the bumper. I can't honestly say I've noticed any difference aside from not adding the backup sensors yet.
