Limited Aftermarket Tire Sizing

Hello! I am pulling out XREAS, ditching the stock wheels and putting in a Toytec Boss lift with 17" tires (Rims chosen are 17"x9"). The installer recommended 285's but I am worried about the mpg hit I will take. I have seen some others put 265's with Spidertrax spacers but a little weary of the additional maintenance that goes along with those. I also thought about 275's but the Falken Wildpeaks in the load range I want don't come in that size.

I calculated a 2 mpg hit on fuel economy, based on size difference between the 265 vs 285...is this reasonable? With my current driving and current fuel prices, that's almost ~$240 per year.

This will likely be a pavement queen, I hardly ever go off road.

Thoughts?

Curious how you calculated a MPG change on paper, what is this based on?

I remember seeing some posts about Limited trim only getting 15-16mpg with 285's. I only get 19 now with 245, so I just implied I'd take a 2mpg hit with 265's and 4 with 285's.

This is why I asked the question if it was unrealistic. Thanks!

my average only dropped .5-1mpg when switch from 20s to 17s w/ 265s then 285s. havent seen a hit when switching from 265 to 285. 16.5 mpg avg, mostly traffic. occasional highway.

Limited Aftermarket Tire Sizing

Don’t do 285 if your truck is a pavement queen. The mpg drop is real and the truck will become significantly more sluggish especially on a Ltd that’s equipped with full time 4wd.
Do 255/75/17 instead,it performs better on roads.

I'm getting an average of about 14 mpg with 285's. 95% city driving, but also have other mods with additional weight. See my sig. Also note your truck will kick out of overdrive a lot more on the highway on shorter/smaller inclines at 70+mph than with OEM tire size.

I've got 265/70R18 on Falken Wildpeak AT/3 (E load rating). I'm getting just shy of 17 mpg, and most of my driving is county roads and freeway driving.

Do you have a pic of your setup? What type of rims do you have?

This guy's setup really intrigued me, but haven't seen it on a Limited. He put spacers on his 265's to push the wheels out. Not sure if that will be needed but I really like the look of the wheels flush. From what I have read, the offset affects how far the rim gets pushed out.

Lifts with 265/70/17, issues?

I have a similar story: 2013 Limited, removed XREAS, added 3 inch Toytec lift, switched to 265/70/17 Cooper AT3's on OEM trail rims.
As with the poster above, I would estimate 0.5 to 1 mpg decrease. Current avg mpg is 18.1 mpg.

I second some of the others - I would not install the 285's on a pavement queen if you are the least bit concerned about mpg.

OP, Snoranger’s limited 4Runner tire size works out to be 32.61” tall with a 265(10.43”) width. This narrow, tall tire provides better rolling resistance, but, due to the height reduces torque and will feel more sluggish and reduce mpg. A 285-70-17 looks great and works out to be a 32.71” tall tire with an 11.22” width, but, will be worse on mileage and power by about 1.5-2mpg over a 265-70-17. I run a 275-70-17, (32.16” x 10.83” width), and IMO, think it is a perfect overall size for looks, mpg, power, etc. Speedometer/odometer is only off 1.8% over my factory equipped 265-70-17 (31.61” tall x 10.43” width). Not worth recalibration in my case. You can also still fit a 275-70-17 under the truck in the spare tire location as opposed to a 285-70-17. Pic of my 4Runner with 275-70-17. Stock TRD Pro height, which, is 1” taller than other factory 4Runner suspensions. Tire sizes will vary slightly from different manufacturers. Good luck with your decision.

Choose your priority, the look of larger tires or slightly better MPG. Oh and with a 17x9 rim and 285’s be prepared for rubbing, and if you put wheel spacers on it’s almost guaranteed.

I was fine with 265’s with my setup, going to 285’s hasn’t made much difference in mileage or drive ability into the mtns.
