2017 w/ 16,000 miles leaking CV boot.

2017 TRD ORP
16,000 miles (lifted for about 10,000 miles)
Icon 2.5" coilovers with SPC UCA's

I noticed today that my passenger side inner (closest to the motor) CV boot appeared to be leaking just a little bit. I'm lifted 2.5" with SPC UCA's. The pic I'm posting is of the CV angles on the passenger side when I installed the lift. Most people on here said they looked normal for a 2.5" lift. What are the options on fixing this? Ive heard that re-booting them can be a pain in the a**. Just looking for advice. I don't want to leave it leaking like it is now.

If there is an upgraded boot/CV that will prevent this from happening again so soon, let me know what it is.

OEM boots are generally the best. The rubber compound is usually most flexible and therefore durable at the steep angles.

I can not see from the picture exactly where the leak is but my old 4th gen started leaking at t eh boots after a lift and I did this. Replacing CV bands - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

Held up for many years till I trades it on my 2014. I did not replace any grease just put on the new clamps.

What is your center hub to lower fender lip measurements?
Looking at some of your pics that front end seems higher than 2.5 inches of lift.
Do you have a pic of the torn boot?
I'd have Toyota re-boot with OEM boots if the CV itself didn't shit the bed. I bet it would cost around $400.

The part number is the same for the left and right.
From what I heard don't bother rebooting, if you're going to take the whole things out just replace it. (Maybe someone more knowledgeable can confirm).

Plenty of posts on folks who have replaced them on their own. Find a friend, get some tools and make an afternoon of it.

I have the same rig, 2017 ORP 2.5" lift, so keep this thread up to date on the solution you go with so we all can learn.

I would say replace the boot (or entire CV if you're lazy) and do a diff drop.

Do you have the before and after measurements of your lift. That angle looks like more than 2.5”.

I will look and see if I can find my before and after measurements, but I know I'm not near as high as some of these guys running the Toytec lifts with 3 to 3+ inches of lift.

The bad thing is, I'm wanting to go higher and put on some 295's. There are some guys on here with pics of their Runners that are way higher than mine.

I'm pretty certain I installed the diff drop when I put the coilovers on. I'll have to check and see. I just got a quick look today before I left the house. I'll get the wheel pulled off and take a good look and see if I can locate the leak or rip in the boot.

I thought that I remembered seeing some heavy duty aftermarket upgraded CV's posted on here a while back. If anyone knows what they are, let me know.

I too am thinking 295's, I'd do a 1 inch BL to keep the CV angles kosher.

Adding lift height in the form of spring preload on coilovers won't help you fit a larger tire. I run mine pretty low (I don't like shitty ride quality) with 305/70/17s and could run my tires with the stock coilovers, they make no difference.

Whatever you do, don't replace your Toyota OEM axles with any aftermarket axles (except CVJ). Get a new boot. Aftermarket axles are shit.

I wasn’t implying that I needed more lift just to fit the 295’s. I’m just saying I want more lift in general. I come from owning all solid axle vehicles where the sky is the limit on lift inches. This 2”-3” max on the 4Runner with coilovers blows.

With your setup going to 295's will require BMC and some additional trimming. I am also going to go to 295's and will be doing the 1" BL, and the BL will not help me out with the 295's. 305's are a whole other level of commitment which I am not quite ready to sign off on.

Also your CV angles do not look that severe and I would say average on a lifted 4runner. I think your boot failure is more of the exception and not the rule. Also, the diff drop is not going to gain you much. Now im just rambling...

TO OP: As other have mentioned, CV shaft angle looks like you have a LOT more than 2.5” lift.
I have 2.1 lift on the front and CV shaft is almost perfectly paralleld to the ground….

If the boot is not actually ripped and just leaking from under the clamp (I am assuming from the small clamp) I would try to tie that clamp up -this is what was done on almost all lifted 4th gen 4Runners as small clamp were not able to hold grease if lifted... especially with “excessively” angled CV shaft as yours…

Here is one link for reference and to see what can be done: http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11612

For the CV angle you have, I do not think any brand of CV boot will work reliably and\or better than OEM…
