RAGO MODULAR STORAGE PANEL SYSTEM (Bare)

I recently bought the 5TH GEN TOYOTA 4RUNNER MODULAR STORAGE PANEL SYSTEM (Bare) on black friday for $255. Which aint bad but now I just need to get it painted. Just wondering if anyone has bought the bare panel and painted it? and what kind of paint they used.

I usually buy all my parts bare and then send them to powder coat all at once. I normally pay less than what the manufactures would charge if they were to send them to PC.

For that price it should come painted any color you want.

Line-X a small part and see how well you like it before you fully commit. Rago sends a small bottle opener you can install on either side of the panels, maybe line-x that part first.

if you want a standard color a powder coating company should be able to add this to a paint or powder job for really cheap, just tell them to add this the next time they paint something the color you want and it should hardly cost you a thing

If you have a proper spray gun for paints, use Ellis brand HYLUX self priming flat black paint. It’s great for metal. Do two coats. That’s what I will be doing on mine. I’m a professional painter in the movie business. Painting mine tomorrow or Friday!

I did the same with mine. I took it to have it powder coated.
I regretted it in the end and in the future I'd try to have it powder coated by the original fabricator.
These boxes are big and they add up. And finding time to do things is not always easy. It just adds an extra step of going back and forth to have the piece powdercoated.

Did you also use primer coats? How’s it holding up so far?

I prepped mine with a little sanding to remove the sharp plasma cut edges, smoothed it with steel wool and then hit it with Rust-o-leum self-etching primer and finished with some satin finish medium gray spray paint that has a mild 'granite' texture.

EDIT: Before applying the first coat of primer it's a good idea to use acetone to remove any possible contaminants on the surface to be painted. Rago's MSPs ship very clean, but I still did a once over with an acetone soaked rag to be certain.

The key is to go ever so lightly on the primer and build it up with multiple coats. I think I did three coats with some extra attention to the edges and the Rago 'R' logo to get good coverage. The first coat should look like a dusting of OD green over the bare metal.

Same goes for the paint, lay it on lightly and build up with about 30 minutes between coats, maybe longer if it's humid or cooler weather.

I like it so much that I'm probably going to dismount the old one and re-paint it the same color. That one wasn't prepped as well as the new one and is currently painted in a grey that matches the interior of the truck. I did a rush job on it and it shows.
