If we go away from the carriage bolt design we can get nicer looking bolts, but you're back to a two tool install, whereas now you only need the one wrench to install a crossbar.
|
I like the carriage bolts, painting the bolt head was painless. I should've done that before I installed the roof rack.

Nope The only option there for now is to get a complete roof rack.

Until recently we weren't getting enough of the hardware to justify a custom order. We're finally starting to go through enough though that we may be getting close.
We haven't had great luck dealing with the local platers in our company's other divisions. Seems to be a glaring hole locally for an honest plating company.
We have recently switched powder coating vendors though, and the first impressions from their batches are excellent.

lfd wide skid weight vs. two factory skids weight
Anyone know how much the wide skid weighs? Trying to determine the weight difference between it and the two factory skids that are removed

Ordered a couple of aluminum crossbars, the wind deflector to hopefully cut down on wind noise, and a Hi Lift mount. If I like I'll probably order the Rotopax mounting plate as I don't have a metal rear bumper to put them on. I'm hoping I can mount the Hi Lift and some Maxtrax (or cheaper version) with only two bars. If not I guess I'll have to get another one. Occasionally I will put a Tule box on it as well for skis and snowboards.
One note, the website says that Toyota recommends 130 lbs max on stock roof rails and 300 lbs total on roof if you get the LFD Off-Road rails to replace stock. Seems like some are putting more weight than that on it. Haven't heard of any problems though. I think I will be able to stay under 130 lbs until I try and put a couple of Rotopax on there.

The website thumbnails are really tiny. Do you have any top and bottom photos of the Front Skid 5th Gen Wide itself?

Those are weights for while the vehicle is moving. Even with a large RTT I doubt anyone is really exceeding 300 pounds on the roof while moving.
Static I think I saw that the roof is rated to something like 600 pounds.

Thanks!
We spent Saturday with OEX (Overland Experts) bashing on and winching with the new bumpers. We're pretty pleased with the results, and OEX was thrilled to see the winch access we've allowed. Just a few more small tweaks to go.
We'll have about four versions of the high clearance bumper - full replacement like you see in the photos here, and then ones that cut the bumper right below the emblem garnish of the grille for everyone who wants to keep the TRD garnish or the Toyota emblems, and those "cut" versions will have options for headlight hoops as well.
Hopefully they'll be available starting in a few months. We're also working on Hybrid bumpers, including options for the early 5th Gens. They need some love too!
On the roof rack front, we've just increased stock and reorder quantities as well for all our crossbars and roof racks to try to decrease lead times on those. We're finishing up testing on aluminum side rail variants for roof racks too.

That's awesome. I'm always trying to find ways to reduce weight.
