Side rail install

My 3/4 rack delivers today and I'm looking forward to installing. After reading through this thread on mounting point damage one person suggests using Buytal tape instead of the suggested silicon. Just wondering if anyone has used Buytal tape with the LFD install?

Couple more prototype things coming through production this week!

We just got our first bed racks for Tundras and Tacomas through this week (probably doesn't interest most of you guys though). They utilize the standard crossbars as part of the design.

We also came up with a wide crossbar to go with the bed racks, since a common use is mounting Rotopax on the sides of bed racks. The new wide crossbar will allow a Rotopax mount to be bolted directly to the crossbar without any additional mounting plates.

Being that its a standard length crossbar, these will also work with our 5th Gen roof racks! It'll make a nice mounting option.

Compared to a standard crossbar

Who else is trying to justify a reason to replace the crossbars on your LFD racks? I know it can't be just me!

Might be too soon to ask, but any plans for an aluminum version of the wide crossbars in the next few months?

Stainless steel, yes. I don't think we'll offer these in aluminum though. Aluminum has a decent amount of flex, and I can see people using these wider ones with heavier concentrated loads. The stainless will give the rust resistance while maintaining the steel strength.

That's great, looking forward to it!

just wanted to drop back in to say we've had great success with our LFD bar x wind fairing combo when i comes to being able to utilize our Thule Sonic XL cargo box. put a ton of miles on this over Christmas and both the wind and gas mileage penalty was negligible at best. these bars provide plenty of room for the Thule "feet" to hook around and under.

here's a side shot to better see how they're arranged. just sitting up there they make no noise with the fairing. i found that with the fairing adjusted to its furthest clearance outward from its mounts, the wind was buffeting it hard enough that it was tapping the roof at highway speeds. adjusting it to the closest distance to the bar solved that. not a problem with the design - just the characteristics of the air movement where my crossbar is mounted. if the crossbar was in a different place, it probably would have acted differently. nice to have the adjustability though, for any situation.

the only "repair" i've had to make is add a little touchup paint to one area right around a t-nut. i didn't initially tighten it enough, and then i retorqued it down hard in cold weather and i think i cracked the powdercoat a bit so there's a small spot of rust. nothing major. still a solid product.

Next year for me. I am still amazed that nobody has copied the open access for the winch yet. But that's good for LFD.
